6770 and Asus Mobo for $80?

Thread Starter
One of my friends is selling his XFX HD 6770 and an Asus Micro-ATX board that supports AM3 CPU's for $80. Since my budet is only about $250, I figured that I could buy an AMD Phenom II X4 965 Processor for $100, then spend some of the rest on DDR3 ram if there is none spare. What I'm planning to use the upgrades for is to play BF3, Skyrim, and other newer games.

Another choice in the situation would be to replace my cpu and just upgrade the graphics card. I have a Core 2 Duo e7200, with an HD 4850. I could replace the cpu with another that I have currently which is the Core 2 Quad Q6600. They both have the same socket type so I know it would be compatible. All I would need would be the new graphics card and the cleaning solution to clean off the thermal paste.

Which solution would be better for gaming? I would like it to last for some time, about 2-3 years. If I should choose to upgrade my graphics card, what should I upgrade to?

My current Specs:
CPU: Core 2 Duo e7200 @ 2.9 GHz
Mobo: GA-P35-D3SL
Graphics: HD 4850
Ram: 4 GB
PSU: 500w

The 6770 alone is worth 80 bucks, I'd pick it up, and if you can't find a use for it, sell them seperately for more!

Buy the combo, then use the 6770 with the Core 2 Quad in your system, sell the rest and get another 6770 if your mobo supports CF smile.gif If not, well, buy icecream.

He doesn't have a Core 2 Quad, he's got a Duo, which won't cut it on todays' games.

I think your original plan isn't a half bad idea honestly, unless you can find a good clocking Q6600 or Q9550 / Q9650 for cheap, that wouldn't be a bad route either, then resell the AM3 board to get more funds up for other upgrades (like more DDR2 or something).

Sorry, there wasn't a TL-DR version. doh.gif

That goes with exactly what I said though, the Q6600 is a solid chip and will keep right up with a Phenom II honestly. So that would get my vote, and then sell the AM3 board for more upgrade funds.

Q6600 is rather lackluster for today's graphics cards. a Q9550 was the limiting factor in my friend's build, and all he had was a 560 Ti

It's on par with Phenom II, which is the other option he was considering. So its not a bad choice, considering he's already got it.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I may just buy the combo, use the core 2 quad, and sell the mobo for some more cash. That would use up only $80, but what should I upgrade after the cpu and graphics?
you should also consider that the HD6770 is like an HD4870 with dx11.
It wont really be much of an upgrade from your 4850.

I suggest you buy them and sell them all, sell the 6770, 4850, and AM3 board
Then use the cash to buy an HD6850 or HD7770
