Asus TF700T Transformer Pad Infinity!

This Thread will be for those that get their hands on one of these beasts to let others know what your thoughts on them are, but please limit your posts to either your observations as an owner or to ask questions if your considering purchasing one. If you wish to comment about other tablets I ask you only do so in a spirit of comparison, please do not start an argument over which is better!

This tablet is basically an updated TF201 Transformer Prime!
Main differences are a newer version of the Nvidia Tegra 3 processor the T33 running at 1.6Ghz, DDR3 memory, a full HD screen at 1920 X 1200 and last but not least the WiFi and GPS problems that plagued the Prime fixed.

Well for those that know and those that may not know the Infinity was released last night at midnight(7-15-2012), however some online retailers started taking orders yesterday(7-14-2012). I was lucky enough to notice this before Newegg.com sold out of them and I ordered the 32 Gig version in the Gray color and currently my order info at Newegg shows that it has shipped. I will keep this updated to let everyone know when it should arrive, when it does arrive and what my thoughts on it are after I've played with it.

Here are some places where you can get more info about this tablet in case you don't already know about it:

Asus Offical Product Page

Asus Offical Features Page

And here are a couple of pre-release reviews that are informative:

AnandTech Review

Engagdet Review

Updates to Come!

Update 7-16: Tracking info says estimated delivery Wednesday 7-18 biggrin.gif

Update 7-17: Tracking info says that my package is in Phoenix which is about 2 hours North of Tucson, so it's official it will be here tomorrow biggrin.gif

Update 7-18: It's Here!!! I'll play with it over this weekend and post as I can about my thoughts and impressions!

The packaging that it comes in is very nice, there was even attention to detail here both ends of the power cable were wrapped in plastic to keep it from getting scratched. Not that one is needed cause Android is so easy to use but there is no instruction manual and since I know that is very important to some, the only documentation that comes with it is the warranty booklet! Also some might wish to know that mine arrived with aprox a 30% charge in the battery, total setup time for me was about 3 minutes from the time I plugged it in to the home screen. So far my first impressions are WoW!!! More to come.

I have no WiFi issues at all, several rooms away through walls and still have an excellent signal. The video performance is excellent to awesome and I've detected no points on the back of the device that have even become warm to the touch much less hot. It is very fast and the transitions between screens are quick and clean as they should be. Only possible Con I've noticed so far is a very small amount of light bleed at the bottom of the screen mainly on the boot screen. I didn't see it during video playback however and I was looking, it's not enough to bug me but someone that is overly critical might be upset. Still more to come as I spend more time with the device!

Update 7-19: Ok just a couple of quick notes, when removing a Micro SD card from the tablet be careful if you depress it and release it quickly it will shoot several feet across the room lachen.gif wished I was kidding but I'm not. I've tried several memory managers/task managers, some for phones and some for tablet and they all stop/kill the system files and cause the tablet to freeze and then reboot. So for now I'm going to use the old fashioned memory clearing method, shut down the tablet when not in use. The fist time it froze I thought the tablet had died and I was ticked, but then all of a sudden it rebooted ???? Then the second time it was right after I used the memory manager, so after it rebooted that time I went into the memory manager to see the list of what it wanted to close and all the Android and Asus system files were in the list suddenly it made sense biggrin.gif

October 2012 brought the update to Jelly Bean version 4.1 biggrin.gif

I'm disappointed that they opted for Tegra 3 rather than an S4 for the non-4g models. S4 is better in every way.

The T33 (according to anand) is a higher leakage chip to achieve that 1.6GHz speed. The S4 @ 1.5GHz is still faster even in a phone (see anands ATT HTC one X review). That's faster with less bandwidth and with an underclocked chip (its rated speed is 1.7GHz). In addition, the Adreno 225 has the same throughput per clock as the SGX543MP2 in the ipad and having much greater programability due to unified shaders instead of fixed function (and the S4 GPU supposedly underclocked like the CPU, but suffers much more from the low bandwidth in phones)

The dual-core is way faster for single-threaded applications (such as web browsers) that most tablet users actually use on a regular basis.

I'm interested in the tablet, but I don't want to spend hundreds more on a 4g tablet (I wouldn't use the 4g) to get the performance I should be able to get anyway.

The only reasons I can think of for this choice are short supply of S4 chips (a known problem, but supply, clockspeeds, and power consumption should get better shortly with Qualcomms new deal with TSMC), or using Tegra as it allows them to market as having "fastest mobile quad core" (whatever that useless claim really means).

Well I do agree that the S4 chips are faster and I will go so far as to say that it might have been better for them to go with the S4 and 2Gigs of Ram like Samsung did in the US version of the Galaxy S3. But the T33 chip is still a great CPU, and it has amazing potential both on the CPU and the Graphics side. I think as time goes by and more and more software is written to take advantage of the Quad cores we will see then start to take ground from the dual cores. Also remember that we would see more Quad core cpu's in phones already if there wasn't an issue with the LTE radio's! The Tegra processors all have a 5th core separate from the main 4 cores that is meant for use on non processor intensive applications like Web Browsing. Plus these aren't 4G tablets they are WiFi only, so if your only interested in a 4G tablet this wouldn't be the one for you.

I don't want 4g (don't need another contract). I just want the processor without being forced to pay for the 4g that I won't use.

Well I totally can understand that thumb.gif I just misunderstood what you were saying it sounded like you were interested in the tablet but didn't want to spend so much on a 4G tablet. But you were saying you didn't want to be forced to spend so much on 4G stuff just in order to get the tech you like Gotcha.

I am curious to hear how it turns out. The 1080p Acer has had mixed reviews so this may be the only real alternative. I just bought a Toshiba tablet I was unhappy with my Tf101 so I was leery of another Asus tablet but part of me wishes I had that 1080p screen. However I am wondering how much of a difference it will make since most Android apps are still designed for phones let alone a 1080p tablet. I suppose it makes a difference if you watch movies on it.

I would like to ask if there are any issues or bugs anyone has discovered on these tablets. I previously owned a TF201 (Sold it yesterday in anticipation of the TF700t) and found that my screen developed bright spots. I primarily used my TF201 for reading magazines and books. The bright spots were highly annoying and asus would not honor the warranty because the tablet was boot unlocked. Is this still the case for Asus warranties on the TF700t with respect to warrnaties? Also, does anyone have one with bright spots on the screen or any other glaring issues? I would really like a critical assessment of the device. My heart belongs to android and this will be another purchase in a long line of loyalty to Asus although I fear I may have to change due to the recent poor quality of their products. (My N61JV also developed a bright spot) frown.gif Can anyone provide rational to Asus not providing warranty repair on faulty hardware? I know boot unlocking is modifying the product but this had nothing to do with the bright spots as many other users that have not modified their device also got them.

I'm sure that if you read the warranty it is probably covered in the warranty as you said probably under the modification portion. If you ever Root, always make a backup of the current factory Rom before hand then if you ever need to for any reason you can put it back to factory settings and the Manufacture should never know the difference. If all you really use your tablets for is reading, you probably will notice very little difference in the Screen. The text would appear to be a bit clearer and crisp but if I were you I'd get the TF300T it has great reviews and would probably suit you great, if the TF700 had taken much longer to be released I was going to get the TF300. Now if you want to use your tablet for movies than yes the HD screen will make a huge difference. The main thing I see people complaining about with the Acer Iconia A700 is that the GPU overheats and the tablet reboots. I don't see this being any issue with Asus, cause I own many new things from them as I have over the years and I've not noticed a down turn in their quality or their customer service.

I did read the warranty and when I called Asus to inquire about the repair they told me the tablet was rooted. I really do not see a benefit to rooting this tablet and the only reason mine was is because I purchased it second hand. The original owner rooted it and failed to tell me. Even if you back up the original rom Asus some how knows which devices are boot unlocked. I do not know how but I imagine the tablets write home to a mother ship once they have been modified (Be Warned). Text was good on the screen of the TF201 and I considered the TF300 but I am a gadget geek and just gotta have a TF700. Again, if anyone owns one please look closely at the screen on an all white page - see if you have bright orbs that occur. This is due to poor screen quality. I also figure the hardest part for asus to supply is the new high res screens - which make me wonder if the manufacture is cranking out C grade material to fill orders.

Mine should be here tomorrow and I'll make you to open a E-book or something similar and let you know if I see anything that looks as though it shouldn't be there. I know what you mean, the TF300 would probably have done everything I needed it to but I had to have the best biggrin.gif
