Over clocking 3930k with corsair h80

Thread Starter
Hello everyone, I am new to oc.net so if this subject has been broached 1000 times before please don't murder me. I have been working on getting my 3930k to a stable overclock. I am using prime 95 for testing and shooting for the 8 hour mark. At 4.4ghz i made the 8 hour mark but my temps are pretty high (low 80's on all cores). This has caused me to order an h100 with 4 delta fans to hopefully lower temps. My question is: is there anything else besides beefing up my cooling that I could do to drop my temps? Setting in my asus rampage extreme bios maybe?
Thanks!
Jenn

I have a i7 3770k at 4.5ghz being cooled by an H100, and I'm at less than 75C on the hottest core after 24 hours. Keep in mind my room is about 26-27C..

When I was at 4.8ghz, I was seeing 85C on the hottest core, while the other three were like 80-82.

When I tested my 4.5ghz OC in the basement, where it is a cool 21-22C, my max temp after 2 hours was only 64C on the hottest core! biggrin.gif

My house averages 76 Fahrenheit or around 24 Celsius. Maybe i just have a hot chip?
the H100 im getting will be modded with 4 delta fans (120~cfm each) in a push pull configuration. If that doesn't fix it I think i might just chuck this thing out the window

well im not an expert, but it is general knowledge that ivy bridge chips run cool @ stock, but hotter than their SB cousins when overclocked.

I don't really play games much besides playing BF3 once in a while, and realistically speaking temperatures NEVER go over 50C on the hottest core. My temps are in the low-mid 40s. on idle, my temps go as low as 25-30C.

Thus, the load p95 puts is only good as a stability benchmark. you won't reproduce those results from normal computing/gaming.

The only way to get cool temps with ivy is to either use a good "real" water cooling system, or delid but that's risky and unnecessary for 99% of people.

I think as long as ur chip is <90C after running a long test, you're good to go.

Yeah i noticed that with gaming i stayed well under 60 but it was still frustrating seeing people at 4.8 and never going above 75 degrees even on prime lol

keep in mind the 3930k is not ivy bridge. it runs hot for completely different reasons. The cpu is rated at 130W TDP (sandy bridge i7's at 95W and Ivy bridge at 77W) so this cpu is a power hog. more power means more heat. The h100 should help as the 3930k is a higher leakage chip so water is very effective for cooling. those deltas are fantastic but you will probably want to get a fan speed controller because they are LOUD! also. if you are cooling with water, you will want to make sure you rig up a fan to cool the VRM heatsink.

current vcore voltage (untested with bios update) is 1.31. I bought a nice fan controller (6 channel 45 watts per channel) to use with all my fans. Fan to cool VRM heatsink? excuse my ignorance

no worries, i caught the mistake but im not one to judge. most of my knowledge is very superficial but a lot of people think that the 3930 and 3960 are ivy's. I believe the only IVY 2011 chip on the market is the 3820 but maybe it isn't ivy at all
