Hey guys,

I run windows 7 from a SSD. I have a 2tb normal drive for all my games, movies and music etc. Windows see's its total capacity as 1.81tb.

So when I explore it, if I highlight every directory on it and view properties, I get a total of 343gb. Yet windows see's the free space on the drive as 0.98tb!

So, 1.81tb minus 343gb = 1.47tb... so where has almost half a tb of space vanished to?

This must be something to do with indexing? Do I need to run checkdisk or something? I've got my system set to show all hidden files etc if that makes and difference?

Any ideas or help greatly appreciated.. I'm sure there's something obvious I'm missing here...

Hmm.. that's peculiar. For an OS drive the likely culprits are System Restore, Pagefile, Hibernation file, etc. - but in your case it's a storage drive, so something isn't quite right there.

I suggest using WinDirStat to track down the space. It'll find just about anything, and it makes it easy to spot what's consuming those GB's.

you could go to my comp and right click the drive and click properties. It will show a pie chart of Used vs free space and give you total capacity. maybe you didn't allocate the full drive or something.

I did that... it show free space as 986 gb and used space as 876 gb which totals 1.82 tb which is correct.

yet wehn i go through and add upp all of my directories, it comes to a total of 343 gb!

i used windirstat to check my drive. it shows the total used space as 526gb... which is better than 343 gb, but still a long way from 876gb

I think even storage drives do have System Restore folders, too. Might want to make sure that's disabled or set to minimum if you don't need it for this HDD.

it had a system volume information, is this what you mean? I emptied that. And it had 92gb in a recycle bin. That's gone too.

Windirstat shows my drive having 365 gb on it now. Windows properties shows it having 717gb on it... so still a long way off!

Just confirming, you do have show hidden files/folders as well as show protected system files/folders enabled in folder options, right?

I do have both set to show, ,and the only 2 folder that are were hidden as protected system files were system volume information, and $RECYCLE.BIN both of which I have emptied.
