Planning on building home server - updated. not sure which hardware would be fine. - Page 2

I haven't had much time to consider buying hardware at all since I had re-examinations. Right now, I'm afraid I'm thinking overkill when looking for hardware parts to form a little cute server. I'm not planning on getting those usual server cases etc. I just want a µATX form factor build with the posibilities to run for 24/7.
  • are there any pros for overclockabilty when building a server (I rather think not, since it's running 24/7, but hey you never know)
  • wouldn't watercooling be more sufficient over time when compared to air cooling? I know it would be pretty overkill when not overclocking anything. But I also kept in mind dust and filth. As we all know, air cooling can get your case a bit dusty at times. Also, is watercooling even more silent than low-dB air cooling case fans? I haven't watercooled anything yet, I wouldn't have a single clue whether the noise level would go down (there's probably still some noise from the pump and the rad I presume, but how's the stats with watercooling's noise level vs. air cooling's noise level?). Dust doesn't affect watercooling much...does it?
  • I also started looking for lower budget cpu's (compared to my main rig) and there's so many of them that I wouldn't even know how big the gains and losses are between those cpu's (mainly i5 ivy bridges are the ones I'm looking at right now).

would be great to get some answers biggrin.gif

Ah, bumping an old thread I see biggrin.gif

To be honest, in your OP, you still have Minecraft listed as part of your server requirements. My Pentium G630 is OK at that. Not sure if the bottleneck is the CPU, but an i3 would be good for a little server, especially if you plan on hosting any other games. I'd get a nice, new Ivy, or maybe a Sandy Bridge i5 even.

As for the cooling, I would not do watercooling. It is more cost and maintenance than it is worth. A decent CPU cooler (or even really nice airflow) should do well, with low noise and cost in mind.

Overclocking, well, I'd do a mild. Again, for the 24/7, you gotta think about that power bill. Also, depends on the CPU you want too, of course.

When you get to choosing RAM, don't limit yourself. Get some ULV Samsung ram. Low power/low profile. Almost as big as the slot. I love it. Doesn't get hot, etc. Anything ULV. Any CPU you get, you'll want a good amount of ram. Anything youre running may not take up much CPU, but RAM....yeah.

Hope this helps a little.

yeah, it's been a while since I've been able to get a hold of my server stuff again ;p. Ok, no watercooling it is then, guess I'll just make sure to have some dust prevention/removal at hand smile.gif.
Average budget Sandies are actually disappearing from the local shops here, especially with the release of the Ivy bridges they dropped down in number drastically. I think I'm better off getting an Ivy due to availability and they cost about the same. To me, Ivy's just a refinement of the already awesome Sandy tongue.gif so I'm sure I'll be more than happy with it. I somehow really like i5's. I've build a rig once for a mate with an i3 and I noticed that it wouldn't be the choice for me while testing a bit with the stuff that I mostly need from a cpu. (it was more than enough for my mate's needs though). My i5-2500k is like the most reliable CPU I've ever had and my i5-660 (Clarkdale) is now doing a damn great job as a htpc. ;D

thanks again for taking your time, really appreciated (y).
And yeah you've hit the spot with the power bill. I rather thought about the durability of a cpu decreasing over time, but also the power bill is quite an important factor.
Btw, is there a more specific name of RAM modules? I've read some really good stuff about them, but samsung does not ship RAM modules to the local shops here (unless it's one of the big shops like Saturn/Media Market, but those modules are mostly some random crap tongue.gif). I can get my hands on other 16Gb low profile module kits for under €100: CL9-9-9-27, 1600Mhz. Sounds totally fine to me biggrin.gif. Most of them are from G.skill, Corsair and Kingston.

I'm guessing it would be no problem at all to have this server using the integrated HD series from Intel, I totally see no reason to get a gpu for it tongue.gif. I'm guessing I could get away with a psu with a capacity less than 300W easily...or am I wrong here biggrin.gif (it does need a lot of cables though, for the hdd's)
