PSU Horror Stories and a Cheap Budget

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I haven't posted much at all on here but I'm always reading the forums on this site. I finally came to a time where I need some advice.

So, I just moved 1,100 miles across the country. When I unpacked and set up my station. My computer would not start. The power light on the motherboard came on but when I pressed the case power button, no juice. So I pulled out the psu and threw it in my old pc, same thing. So I'm assuming that the psu is my problem. It's a 500w Cooler Master that has lasted me almost four years and in two different builds. I'm thinking a psu of that low of wattage also didn't like the overclock I've been running for the past eight months, which I think that has cause me a few voltage crashes. So I would say that I got my moneys worth out of it. So now comes the time to pick a new one out. I know that I want a modular psu for maximum case airflow. I also want enough wattage to be able to upgrade to a 7850 or 7950 gpu, once the price drops a bit. From what links I'm posting maybe you guys will have a good idea of what I'm working with for a budget. I really don't want to spend over $60 or $70 bucks and spending less would be even better. I'm just afraid of all the horror stories that surround cheap psu's. Any insight on my diagnosis and what I should buy would be much appreciated...

My old roommate recommended this. But all I keep reading are horror stories of this one killing gpu's, mobos, or sound cards, and that it is crap...

This is what I'm looking at and actually considering of purchasing. Seems to have pretty descent reviews, a $25.00 rebate (i know about the slow rebate game), and a three year manufacturer warranty that OCZ seems to stand by if you complain enough.

I recommend a corsair or seasonic PSU. They are probably the best around. Better to just get a decent PSU than to keep throwing money at bad ones and replacing them.

I would recommend the SILVERSTONE Strider 600w

I would definitely go with the second one out of those two, DO NOT BUY THE FIRST ONE. Generally any psu company that has max in the name is no good, Enermax being an exception i believe.

Visit the the Recommended PSU thread and pick from there anything in ~500W area.

So a 500w would be enough to support one gpu and my overclock? I always thought my bottleneck was my RAM because I couldn't oc the memory without voltage crashes. I thought I had just bought cheap memory. Now I'm thinking it may have just been a power issue. Also, are modular cables really worth it?

They are very nice. but not necessary. A semi modular would work great for you, you would not pay for fully modular and still get good airflow. On the semi you will almost always use the non modular wires anyway, and then add the extras that you need.

If you like keeping a clean case and having an easy setup.

Far more than enough, what you have there is a <300W system.

What specific Cooler Master PSU did you have?
First off, your computer pulls like 250W. Just getting that out there.

Second, your 500W CoolerMaster is actually a low-end 350W with shoddy build quality.

Third, the Raidmax is actually a pretty crappy 400W with even shoddier build quality.

Fourth, just buy this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139026&Tpk=cx430v2

You should use almost all of the cables so modularity doesn't matter for you. It has more than enough power, being a real 430W (though if I were selling it I would mark it as a 400W... but that's me), and it has long cables, decent build quality, decent performance, and is fairly cheap.
