Motherboard superiority

Thread Starter
Hello fellow forum members rolleyes.gif

My question is about motherboards as you might guessed smile.gif

Does upgrading your motherboard gives you any performance boost ? I mean from the fact, that different motherboards can support newer generation of processors and newer connections like USB 3 or thunderbolt.
Does it really affect how your actual hardware performs ? In my understanding it is just a hub for all other pieces of hardware you have and it let them communicate between each other.

But all motherboards have same data transfer standards aka PCI express of SATA 2 / 3
So when you think of upgrading one, reasons are mainly better support of future hardware or more convenient location of slots for example ?

My motherboard is rather good, can support I7 processors and have couple USB 3 ports. So unless new generation processor or RAM is not supported by it, I see no reason of upgrading one right ? My system won't work faster with same parts, but different motherboard ?

Thank you kindly for your answers and sorry for being somewhat foggy about what I actually want to know.

A little, though generally too small to notice in day-to-day usage. Ocaholic.ch has benchmarks comparing chipset series motherboards against each other in each of their reviews, so you can look at those.
I actually find that high-end micro-ATX and mini-ITX boards perform better than their full size ATX/XL-ATX/EEB brothers based on the Ocaholic tests. I think its because that the connections between the CPU, RAM, chipset, etc. are of a shorter distance on the smaller boards. It's still not noticeable.
My advice: just choose the motherboard that fits your needs. smile.gif

well, I dont know about these days

But when I was really Into overclocking the Socket 939's

there were CLEAR Differences to what Motherboards offering what features pertaining to overclocking

Some motherboards could handle High FSB, some could not. Same with Voltage and Ram Timing.

But I doubt there would be a reason to change the mobo on an i7 unless the one you have cant overclock at all.

its also good to know how the board layout is, the further items are from the CPU RAM GPU Combo the "Slower" they are

but were talkin such a Small difference you wont see it.

motherboard will give you better performance. not by to much but it will. your 3dmark11 higher or lower, ssd hhd & usb2/3 read/ write speeds, memory speeds, pretty much all components will work have small performance differences on all motherboards.

this review shows the difference in performance between the Rampage IV Extreme & Gigabyte GA-X79-UD7, check the rest of the review for all differences

Well, I'm not into overclocking :-)

I have SSD drives, good I7 CPU, plenty of RAM and my new GTX 690 coming soon. So basically if you are not into some specifics like voltages, overclocking and so on, then real life performance difference is somewhat negligible ?

Thanks again for your quick answers !

with running stock speeds?

then yah, FOR THE MOST PART, everything is the same across the board. again some boards are slightly better than others in small ways, but mostly changing the ability to overclock with stability.
