Envy 6z Initial Impressions - Page 8

Um bumping this thread for quick question about the 6z-1000, since I ordered one. Does the laptop support 1600mhz ram or will it pull it back to 1333mhz? If it does support 1600 mhz, whats a good dim that I could buy or would I have to buy a 2x4 pack instead of just another 4gb ram stick with my free 4gb upgrade? Also for a samsung 830 250gb ssd 189.99 is a good price? I haven't checked up on ssd's in a while and not sure exactly what a good price is at the moment; especially for a 250gb lol.. Thanks.

Add a 2nd 4GB DDR3 1600 stick will be fine. All mobile Trinity APUs support DDR3 1600 speed.

Kingston, Samsung, Crucial, G.Skill are all good RAM brands. There are probably more.

Samsung 830 at $190 is about $10 over the cheapest I've seen, still a good price. I'd check http://slickdeals.net for a good deal. For example, the Crucial M4 256GB was $150 just a few days ago, listed on slickdeals (waaaaaaay easier to set up a "deal alert" and check your email than check 10 online stores daily hoping for a price drop on a good SSD).

Unfortunately, the A10-4655M only supports up to DDR3-1333 and that info is direct from AMD. You can also see the max memory speed support of all mobile Trinity APUs with a chart in the AnandTech review of the A10-4600M, which I'm guessing was sourced from this AMD page.

You can just buy a 4GB stick if your system came with a single 4GB stick. It is generally better to have matching sticks for dual channel for optimal performance. Otherwise the system might be limited by the slower of the two sticks and different manufacturers may not like working together. I have done it before and it's not like you'er dividing my zero or anything, it will probably still work. There are actually quite a lot of good memory brands like Samsung (30nm), G.SKILL, Corsair, Kingston, Crucial, and so on.

With the SSD question jrbroad77 pretty much covered that. Just remember with the SSD to stick to a 7mm height drive. All Samsung 830 SSDs use that height but the Crucial M4 comes in both 9.5mm and 7mm.

In a nutshell, memory runs at 1333mhz. Matching sets work better, but another 4gb stick should still show you gains.

Samsung 830's are great, that's a decent price. Only 7mm Drives will fit in this, so the 830 is perfect

Crucial M4's are 9mm, but they also make 7mm variants.

Upgraded my memory to 8GB dual channel. Damn single channel was the bottleneck of this machine. This ultrabook is a beast. Just played Warhammer Space marine on battery for 2 straight hours and still has 23% left. biggrin.gif
