Possible damage to CPU - Made a stupid mistake?

Hey guys, first of all I would like to thank everybody for helping me with my various questions I have with my PC. I really appricate the help thumb.gif

Anyways I switched motherboards from a gigabyte board to a ASrock board. I am using the same components (apart from the motherboard of course) tongue.gif Anyway I kind of did a dumb thing when I was transferring my cpu. You know the CPU socket? You know the way how you are supposed to lift the leaver before you put the CPU in? well I did the opposite redface.gif I put the CPU in the socket before lifiting up the CPU leaver. I was half asleep at the time so I pulled the leaver back with the CPU inside and heard a cracking noise. I thought i was f**** big time however I examined the pins briefly and there was no bent pins. I put the CPU back in the socket (with the leaver up) and pulled it down. Just out of curiosity, I pulled the leaver back up and it made the same cracking sound.

Could I have done any damage to the socket or the CPU? My computer has never crashed *touch wood* but it acts weirdly like google maps is incredibly slow to scroll around w/firefox and games appear to be running slightly slower FPS wise than on my previous motherboard.

Thanks!

I did one pass of memtest + windows memory diagnostic and it no errors were found.

If it persists you could take another look foward any pins that could be bended, and than look at the AM3 socket datasheet to see if the problem is related with the bended pin.

Sorry for the poor english ):

If there was damage to the cpu the only thing that you will see is a black screen on your monitor.

Don't do a stress test, if you heard cracking then you definitely cracked something. Take it apart and see what cracked, stress testing is a good way to really mess something up. There is no need to potentially mess it up more than just a small plastic bracket. If you broke the bracket then your cooler may not be sitting down flat and thus not cooling all your CPU.

Hi guys, thanks all for your responses. I had a look at the bracket surrounding the CPU and reapplied the the thermal heatsink. Everything is okay. The noise I describe is when I move the leaver which I suppose is normal enough. I have a problem with the CPU temps though. Its hitting the 63+ mark after less than a minuite stress testing. I think it might be down to the crappy cooler I am using (which has a couple of scratches on the copper base somehow) I touched the copper top and its lukewarm. Although the CPU fan seems like its not spinning as fast as it did on my old motherboard which might indicate a firmware/motor issue even though its running at 3000+ rpm. When I removed the heatsink from my old motherboard a peice of metal located near the side of the clip fell off.

I disabled the 2 cores as a precautionary measure ( I don't really need them for gaming anyway) until I get a new heatsink. I had so much trouble getting this POS heatsink on the new AM3+ mounting mechanism mad.gif Temps seem to be good at 46C and CPU core at 62C after 20 min furmark.

Furmarks a GPU stresstest. How can u test the CPU with that..

Plus, 62c is pretty much the max for the CPU.
