The reasoning from the NVIDIA Linux engineers about this missing feature is that with the Fermi architecture it's a lot more complicated to handle and it's on their TODO list to implement overclocking support, but it's a lower priority. I suspect that Kepler also won't be able to be overclocked under Linux since the support is still M.I.A. from Fermi, but I'll see what NVIDIA Corp has to say on the topic.

I do not have a Fermi (anymore) or Keplar card so I cannot confirm if that has changed.

Re-editted my post while being ninja'd.

Read the original article you quoted. It even says the only 2 chips that can't be overclocked are Fermi/Keplar.

Not being able to overclock Fermi and Keplar cards is quite significant imho. That means none of the GTX 400, GTX 500, and GTX 600 series cards can be overclocked via software. That is at least three generations of graphics cards. Only other way is to BIOS mod and flash. Edit: Excuse me for going a little OT. redface.gif

Blame Nvidia for lack of support for no overclocking. They basically say, ohh linux, yay well no one uses it so you get the bare minimal support. IIRC AMD opengl implentation in general is superior than Nvidia's, Just from benchmarks that i have seen our the year. Plus AMD's drivers are way better than Nvidias in linux are released at the same time as the windows releases.

Anyways, Fianlly i can use steam and source without wine on my archlinux laptop.

Not that significant, imo.

Linux has never had a real reason to overclock graphics. Wait for some top games and a reason to push graphics to the point where they need overclocking, and it will come.

The reason I brought it up was because AMD has overclocking on their latest cards in Linux.

AMD openGL being better? I got to see that because it might put to rest my fears of using an AMD card/drivers in Linux. I mean so many complaints about them I just decided it was best to avoid the headaches. My only gripe with Nvidia is over their stance against Wayland but considering how hostile the community seemed to be towards wayland I guess they're just following the trend.

You might be wink.gif. I might have thought this way some time ago, but after trying Ubuntu, and now, owning a Mac, I wish nearly all of my games were compatible with the Mac OS. Of course, there is already support, so I have no right to complain (and I'm not smile.gif).

L4D2 on Linux and I'll have even less reasons to boot up windows (which I rarely do). Plus with all the Win8 hate you'd think people would be happy about alternatives being possible. First Source and Steam and then the rest of my games would be awesome. Hell, just Source would cover about 95% of my gaming these days.

The Window 8 hate is because the little babies can't adapt to change. Just Valve supporting Linux is great but in reality does nothing. Great I can load up L4D2 play some rounds with friends. Oh I feel like some Battlefield 3 now let me boot back into windows. Why go back and forth between OS's when you can just use one for everything?

Valve is going to pave the way. When they show the world there is money to be made, it's only a matter of time.

It's how the world works, people are greedy, they want money and will follow it.
