If you want benchmarks check out phoronix, there are a ton. The thing about amd drivers being poo on Linux was back 4 years ago. When AMD took over ATI, everything changed and they totally revamped the Linux support and even hired a seperate special developemtn team to solely code the Linux drivers for Linux. The past 2 years Nvidia's drivers have been getting buggier and buggier, and are neglecting to fix many big flaws that are just glaring in the face. My nvidia card in my laptop for example has a blue hue on adobe flash plugins, such as youtube caused by nvidia drivers that nvidia recognizes but hasn't fixed for the past year. And the fact that they leave out a lot of features on the Linux drivers vs the Windows ones, too.

Smurf vision is an Adobe contribution problem as well. Blame both for that lovely debacle. Idiots indeed. rolleyes.gif But what are the other features...I mean my cards old as crap but I'm starting to think of looking for a new one as I need more than just x264 VDPAU support.

It's not Linux's fault the game devs bought into DX (which isn't bad itself just that MS used it to corner a market in their monopoly heyday). Source should follow L4D (or should proceed I think from the rumors of the past 2 years). I don't go back and forth much...I stay in Linux unless I game and that's pretty much the extent of Windows's usefulness for me. Honestly, why would anyone say..."hey (insert company's name) don't go find a new market that the rest of your competitors are too stupid to go for." That's pretty much why Apple got the pad fad going. I can hate them as a "tech company" but as a marketing firm they're top notch and that's why they're (over)valued so much. They went where others wouldn't or didn't go as "well". For me I hope that is the story for Valve with Linux.

Gaming is the only thing keeping me on windows. I'm rooting for the linux gaming devs/community 110% and I think it's only a matter of time before we see linux being adopted by valve/steam.

When you're a business you can ignore the minority of the base. With Linux...fork it.

You know...I kind of wish Valve would go for broke and do a SteamOS based on Linux. I would pay more than I would pay for Windows.

Here is an awesome article(not the wolfire one) on how DirectX became the standard over OpenGL. Most of it is due to MS marketing that people somehow get suckered into, but also failure on OpenGL Archtiecure Review Board.

Awesome that they put up a blog. Hope they update it frequently. Even if its just them rambling about getting something to work, be nice to here about the development of all things Steam and Source on Linux.

While this might seem like a good idea, I think that even if they would go through with a Steam OS it would be destined to fail and probably hurt gaming with Linux. First take a look at Chrome OS I'm sure that most of the world uses their computer primarily for stuff online. Which is likely what they were thinking when they made Chrome OS, but because it is specialized into only being web browser made into an OS it hasn't done well. People will want more than just access to games. Yes I realize that there are a lot of people who basically just use Windows for gaming, but given a choice between dual booting an OS just to play games and having a single OS that can do your everyday stuff and play games which would more people choose. The second reason why I don't think this is a good idea is because it would likely only end up playing games that are on Steam (and likely have to use the Source Engine as well). This in my opinion would lead to one of two outcomes, other devs decide to ignore linux/Steam OS and continue to make windows only games or every big game dev decides to make their own branded linux-like OS that only plays their games. Can you imagine what EA OS or Activision OS would be like? I am actually afraid of the thought of those two companies deciding to make an OS. Not to mention you would need to install as many that many different OS's to play all of your games. I think that what Valve is doing is probably the best thing that can happen to Linux gaming at this current time, because a specialized gaming OS will either drive others away or force people to multiboot a ton of operating systems just to play a different game.
