Not every game has been ported for mac, there is more and more every year though.

If this is utilizing OpenGL wont that be good for everyone though? Windows included?

Push towards GPGPU, right?

LOL obviously I was talking about the ones that have been ported. The topic of this thread is Steam porting L4D2 and others to Linux. They've already ported their entire catalog to Mac. Add up few games I already own like Bejeweled 3, Killing Floor, Trine, Torchlight... and thrown in a few I don't like Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell, Civilization V... All having Mac ports. I know it's just wishful thinking but just those games being ported over would be the biggest thing since GCC 3.2 LOL tongue.gif

(FYI.. I focus on Mac games because Apple doesn't have directx support either. So if it was written in opengl and had it's code cleaned up to run on Mac then it's a very good chance it can be ported over to Linux relatively easy. Even if the developer didn't feel it was worth it, the fact that it runs on Mac mean it'll probably run pretty damn well under WINE...)

OpenGL (in my experience, and in many synthetic benchmarks), typically performs BETTER on Linux. Both for ATi and Nvidia, even though ATi's drivers have to work for your particular setup before you can even attempt 3d acceleration with OpenGL.

For example, an OpenGL game may get 75-80FPS on windows for me, but the same game at same graphical settings may get 80-100fps on Linux (through wine - not even native, which says a lot) - a pretty big performance gain. DirectX Games however through wine usually take a small performance/graphics quality hit (i.e. DX11,DX10 games reduced to DX9 only features, and framerates drop 5-10fps, this is obviously a non-native executable and non-supported/existant API)

I use Arch but my main issue is that I like to have the latest greatest tech stuff and by hitching myself to Linux I don't really have guaranteed compatibility with top shelf software or hardware like I do windows. I kind of just use Linux for the sake of using Linux not really because it is anymore useful to me.

My hope as that more actions like this will push Adobe to port the CS, or configure creative cloud to be platform agnostic. If this moves linux up a percent or two it's userbase will be bigger that is was when Adobe and Apple partnered many years ago.

They don't need to go so drastic. If a majorly successful game openly (vocally) supports linux natively, others will try to replicate the business strategy.

Right now I can only play HoN natively on linux, if I could play Dota 2 natively I would never use windows.

Well I've heard of Valve doing some pretty odd things at the request of people randomly sending them emails. This might be beyond them though.

As much as I don't care about who uses windows or who uses Linux.....it's not smart to segment the market. just let them create one game for one platform. Add linux and we'd be dealing with longer development time, higher cost, longer waits on patches...

The only other thing I can think of though in Linux's favor is game developers wouldn't need to pay a royalty fee to MS if the game was a linux game....sooo you'd have a point there

But they already create for two and that second ports across reasonably easily. It would help to take out the elephant in the room that is DirectX/MS. The need not to keep them happy to continue making a living would be a nice weight lifted off the shoulders.
