i7 950 - Time to re-OC!

Thread Starter
Okay guys, I've been off the OC game for awhile and I got an unstable msg today out of the blue after 1.5+ years. So I'm gonna wipe the slate clean and re OC this baby and run some tests smile.gif

Currently, I'm not running hyperthread since I don't multi-task and never have 100 tabs open at once.

Before I start, can someone please explain the basics of GFLOPs and what that means for performance? Do higher Gflops mean that the voltage / timings for my memory is "more" correct?

Just a heads-up, the cpu might be degrading and simply reformatting wont get your CPU back to where it once was.

^ this. when I first got my i7 950 I can OC to 4.2ghz Ht on easy. after years of abuse(folding for months etc) It's now down to 4.1ghz albeit voltage is still lower but I'm having a hard time getting it stable at 4.2ghz now

Signs of a degrade come with OCing, but its perfectly fine. Not like it will degrade to the point it can't even run stock. Unless you go extreme of course.

Gflops is better if it is higher. I believe it tells you how well your CPU does its math.

Just use the old settings and bump up the vcore a bit and testing. Not like you switched CPUs and you can't use previous knowledge.

Thanks for the replies, I haven't used my CPU for anything hardcore, it use to sit at 4.0 at 1.25, so yeah I bumped the vcore a little and turned off HT since I never really run anything that needs it. I'm at 3.99 now with 1.28 on load. The temps are a lot better without HT on, I'm just going to play with it slowly up to 4.2, if it doesn't stabilize within reasonable temps I'll be happy with 3.9.

I would just keep it at 4.0 and stay there. First, it's drastically lower vcore and 2nd, it's great performance for the vcore. Also, you don't run the chance of killing your CPU.

Totally agree, I will leave it the way it is, it's at 3.99, 10mhz isn't worth the headache to me.

It never is that big of a deal. 3.90 is enough to do daily things.
