Weird 7770 issue after overclocking

Thread Starter
Hi there,

I'm new to overclocking but after getting my new MSI R7770 OC I fiddled around a bit on afterburner.

I have increased core and memory clocks without problems, found a stable overclock.

However, now whenever I reset to default clocks and run a stress test, FPS drops to insanely low levels. This happens only at default settings... even if I increase or decrease the memory or core by 1 mHZ then run Kombuster, FPS will be up at a normal 55-60 range. As soon as I put it back to default (1020, 1125) and run Kombuster, FPS will be around 10. It seems it will work fine on any settings other than the original ones. Which seems extremely weird to me?

I also used furmark to test with cpu-z open and it seemed that the core and memory were not increasing from idle when the test starts (they were staying at 300 and 149 MHz)

I guess it isn't a huge issue as I can just change a setting by 1 MHz and run it at that but it just seems so weird I wanted to hear from some people that know more than me!

Thanks in advance for any assistance

Shouldn't stock be locked at 150 MHz? It could be your overclocking program interfering with the stock settings, if you want to run at stock disable your oc program and reset the settings in CCC.

This.

If you want to run a stock test go to CCC and uncheck overdrive. thumb.gif

Thanks for your replies.

I've been using afterburner to overclock. Overdrive was never checked in CCC, if I close afterburner down and then make sure overdrive is unchecked it still happens. Even if I check overdrive and change the values slightly in CCC it still happens. If I change the clocks in afterburner it fixes it,...Is there some noob mistake i'm missing here?

Thanks for your help

Okay I just uninstalled afterburner and it seems like it's fine now, back to normal. Will be interesting to see if it arises again when I install afterburner.

I got similar issues with afterburner idle 149MHz and different voltage settings. Ran afterburner before I discovered GPU Tweak which is great.

Have another weird issue I thought I would see if anyone can help explain..

In Afterburner the voltage is shown at 1174 stock. However, in gpu shark or any tests the VDDC is actually 1.20... i'm pretty sure the default voltage for a MSI 7770 OC is infact 1.2 but why does afterburner show 1.174?

Also, changing the voltage slider in afterburner to anything (even max of 1250) does not result in any change in gpu shark or any tests...it stays at 1.2 no matter what.

Any explanation for this? I tried searching but couldn't find anyone that had a similar problem.

Thanks

Combination of things. Mostly to do with running 12.6 catalyst driver.

MSI does its best to keep up with everything AMD is putting out but it naturally just can't. New drivers almost always break afterburner.

I run 12.6 myself and afterburner 2.2.2 works okay. I use trixx in combination with afterburner to get the clocks to move in 12.6. I do believe the stock voltage of the 7770 is 1.2 @ 1000mhz and beyond. I think at 300mhz core its 0.86v. And as for changing the voltage, I've never had success with afterburner changing any voltages. Usually this requires a bios flash using RBE. I haven't done it on my 7770, but im sure eventually i'll be unsatisified with the paltry 1065/1300 oc I get outta my msi card.

I have this same card and there's an odd bug with the interface. You have to unlock the core voltage control in settings but when you do the voltage bar shows 1174. Hitting "reset" will nudge the bar back up to 1200.

I'm running 2.3.1 and my slider for the Core Clock stops at 1200 MHz and Memory at 1250. Did you unlock something to get it to slide higher or is that a function of you running 2.2.2
