Need Advice For Sig Rig Upgrade

Hey guys and girls,

I need some advice on upgrading my sig rig, haven't been paying attention to much in the way of PC components lately but am thinking of a Asus Crosshair V Formula/ThunderBolt Mobo, AMD FX-8150 CPU, 16GB Corsair 1866MHz DDR3 CL9 Vengeance Mem, 1200W Silverstone PSU and an extra Sapphire HD 6970 same as in my PC atm. Just wanted an opinion on whether or not this would be a good way to go or not, i do have a bit of cash but not a massive amount and i would prefer to stay with AMD (no offense intended to the other side). Also, has anyone used the Thunderbolt add-on card yet? just wondering if there was any noticeable change

Better RAM if you don't care too much about the aesthetics, personaly I think it's actually pretty cool thumb.gif

I would also think that your current psu would be more than enough for CF 6970's but another member should be able to confirm it. As for the rest of your build I can't really help much there as I haven't used or really looked into the FX series much as I'm a little bit of an Intel fanboy hehe

Get the fx-8120 and get a cooler with the money left. Overclock to 4.5ghz and good to go.

(fx-8120 vs fx-8150 = 1090t vs 1100t. Same old same old. Only clock difference)
(Fun fact, I could use my 1090t on "Zambezi" mode. 3600 regular, 4000 turbo frequency on auto voltage biggrin.gif)

Thanks BeardedJesus, As i am hoping to not upgrade for a couple of years, i'd rather be safe with the 1200w PSU and the RAM is something i am not sure about, The Vengence series looks nice and has the cooling fins but also decent speed, Besides, I can always upgrade the RAM at a later date if needed. I was more concerned about the Power consumption and if an SSD would be wise as well? They haven't come down in pice enough for me atm really unless i can see a Massive improvement in speed, I was thinking about a 1TB WD Raptor for Games plus a 120GB SSD for Boot.

good idea CatScratch, Would make a bit more sense to OC it but i do like the appeal of the 3.6 stock clock on the 8150, I am hoping to keep this rig for a while yet so i might be better off spending a little extra to get a bit more out of it in the long run but i will think about it, i have a couple of weeks to sort out the little things yet.

Cards are using less and less power. A 650 watt power supply is enough for most modern cards. You can even SLI 680s on a single 650 watt power supply. Unless you plan on putting set ups together with 3-4 cards there is absolutely no reason for that. Well aside from blowing money

750w si enough for SLI/CFX high end card, now, 16 gb are useless unless you use programs for rendering/modeling on 3d or you edit videos,, 6gb are enough and a SLI for that card worth getting FX 8120 first or getting 2x HD 7870 which will perform way better,unless you get a unlocked 6950 or used HD 6970

Speak for yourself please. My 16 GB sees plenty of use. It used to be common knowledge that having a massive amount of really fast RAM made games (and every other program) run faster and smoother. I am not sure where this "you don't need more than 4 GB" mentality came from.

It's going to be a used 6970, only 4 months old but still a good price for me, as for the PSU, If my 750w will run all this then i will probably get an SSD instead. This is the most help i've had trying to decide all this thank you guys!!
