An SSD will change your entire computing experience more than any other single upgrade you can do.

You can use 8120 on 8150 clocks, just multiplier difference, nothing lost. No TDP increase.

As Jagged_Steel kindly showed, that samsung ram really is amazing stuff. Shrouds and heatsinks for memory are pretty useless unless you care about epeen or aesthetics. If you want this rig to last a while why not keep your current psu, sell the the 6970 and put the money you saved towards and nice 7970/680 so you can leave yourself with an upgrade path in the future. Sure a stock 7970 will not be quite as fast as the crossfire setup but slap a nice overclock on it and bobs your uncle.

8gb is plenty.more than that s overkill

Seeing as you're going to buy a new board and cpu, why don't you go with Intel? It's a better alternative.

But if you're insisting on AMD, I would rather wait it out for Piledriver and see how much better it is.

As for the power supply, a 750W PSU is more than enough for SLI or CFX. Components are being more efficient now so they will draw less power
post #16 of 20
it is so close . . . WAIT for PILEDRIVER. if you can't, then the sabertooth and the 8120 will suffice.

edit: pick the ram Jagged recommended.

8GB for a future proof rig might not be the best route. Since I'm still outdated to DDR2 take what I'm saying with a grain of salt, but mine gets maxed out plenty. If he's not using all of it he can always RAMDISK some for cache and other stuff. Using Lightroom, Photoshop, and firefox alone I can max out 8GB of RAM. Ram's too cheap to not just get 16.

Dude, seriously, spend 100-120 bucks and get you a 128GB Crucial M4. You will not regret this decision. People will say you won't notice a difference in games. Well if you have a loading screen you will. And when you minimize the game you will. When you're on these forums, or doing ANYTHING else on the computer, this is the best upgrade ever. Trust me, you want an SSD, they're WAY better than the raptors.

Also don't forget with that huge power supply you don't need, you'll lower the efficiency of the unit if you don't put a strong enough load on it. I'm not going to pull inaccurate numbers out of the rear, but I think it's somewhere in the ballpark of 20-80% is where you want to be. So with a 1000W PSU you would want to at least be drawing 200W or the efficiency of the unit plummets. Someone with more knowledge should correct me on this. Where is the target load for a power supply?
