High temps on overclocked i7 930

Hi all,

I'm a noob to overclocking but after reading chadamir's guide and working at it for a week, I managed to overclock my i7 930 to 4.0 ghz. The vcore needed for that was 1.3375v. It passed 14 hours of Prime95 on blend so I think it's stable.

My problem is that I'm seeing high temps- I thought my rig would be quality enough to keep things cool but apparently this is not the case. Despite a Noctua NH-U12P on the CPU and two fans around it, one on the right and one on the top to blow air out of the case, my idle temp is 45C. When I was overclocking to 4.0ghz the highest I hit was 87C and I only managed to get that "low" because I opened up the case from the sides!

Do you have any suggestions as to what I can to do to lower temps?

Those temps don't see out of line for that cooling with that CPU and voltage/OC.

If your case runs cooler opened up than closed, it's probably not a very good case.

What are your ambient temps?

What other voltages are you using?

Are you using LLC?

Well, I couldn't see any setting to enable/disable LLC on the bios so I assume it's on.

Ambient temp is 21.8 degrees.

Other voltages are:

QPI/TT at 1.31875
vdimm at 1.66

Everything else set to Auto.

The LLC setting for your BIOS is near the bottom the AI Tweaker menu in your BIOS setup.

Also, it's nearly always disabled by default, or if absent, not possible to be enabled. LLC deliberately violates Intel power delivery specifications so having it enabled by default is almost unheard of.

Leave it disabled.

I'd recommend not using Auto voltages. ASUS boards (especially the P5 and P6 lines) have a tendency to overvolt stuff without asking, on both auto and the lowest setting. I'd recommend using one notch above minimum for most voltages.

QPI/VTT and vDIMM are probably slightly higher than they need to be.

QPI/VTT and vDIMM are probably slightly higher than they need to be.

QPI/VTT is at optimum. Any lower and I get BSOD-124.

I was also worried that auto settings would be overvolted so I downloaded TurboV and had a look. Apparently every setting that I left to Auto is on the minimum possible voltage.
CPU PLL: 1.80
ICH PCIE: 1.5
IOH PCIE: 1.50
ICH: 1.1
IOH: 1.10

TurboV can't determine anything beyond what the BIOS tells it. You should verify stated voltages are close to what they say they are with actual DMM readings.

My P6TDs significantly overvolt some components. And prior boards have done things like this:

That's a hot chip..you could build a bong cooler ph34r-smiley.gif .A more expedient solution would be to disable HT and/or LLC and lower your vcore and vtt as much as stably possible.

Yes, it was where you said it would be. I enabled it and managed to take the vcore down two notches to 1.325 and the temperature down two degrees.

I wouldn't expect much better temps without upgrading your cooler these CPUs put out huge amounts of heat.
