@DuckieHo... the fact is most people on OCN nowadays have never even heard of Netscape Navigator. Had you been around computers that long you'd understand what this is about.

Netscape was far and away superior to IE back in the day.....

Is Bing the default search engine in IE, or does an option pop up allowing the user to select one?

That's the fundamental problem here that I'm sure anyone else thinks about. Browsers are gateways to advertising. Given MS's position as the worlds long-dominant operating system, they can sway users to IE and Bing and rake in the millions. That's why google pays Mozilla hundreds of millions of dollars to remain the default search engine in Firefox.

It's like if they limited every non-MS software to operate on 1 core only, while MS software can use all of them ... should that be allowed?
And this ruling by the EU was punishment for their misdeeds, it's not a standard that has to be used from here on in, it's part of MS's compensation to the competition it illegally cheated.
I think I am understanding this right redface.gif

OK. So is it just MS cheating parole? And since they've done that now the EU is upset again? I find it kind of funny that MS cheating parole to mimic the actions of it's competitors is seen as "bad". I mean fine...MS was bad for doing that but come on...why let anyone do it anyway then? I guess I'm off topic but if MS get's punished for anti-competitive practices like not allowing/crippling/not including other's browsers then so should everyone else that does (meaning Apple and Google).

To go on with your analogy, if you are on parole, just because your competitors can drink doesn't mean you can drink and get away with it. I'm not following that part of your argument.

As for what goes on with other systems, I can't really comment on that since I know little about them.

Umm can someone explain to me why everyone is complaining about something from 1998? It's all in the past and not many people have download caps anymore. Microsoft made the OS, made their own browser, and integrated it into the OS. Their software so it's their decision. Its 2012 now so there are no longer any grounds to say that people can't wait for a simple download. You want a customizable OS? Go get Linux or deal with it.

/random rant

Tl;dr their software, their rules.

I ran away after your first comment to wiki browser wars and stumbled upon learning that essentially modern day Netscape is firefox..

Firefox FTW.

I think it's extremely rude that IE completely destroyed Netscape, went as far as plotting a giant E on the front lawn of their offices and then bundled their browser so far in that no one even know what was going on.

I will say though, that although they settled, and now went back on the agreement (there will be punishments) the whole thing is a bit out of wack seeing as today people do know they have browser choice. It is not a whole new internet ...................

So should the ruling stay?

except microsoft did a lot of illegal things to get a monopoly, far beyond just this (if you want to read more about this look up the case). microsoft achieved a monopoly illegally and allowing them to take it now would be unfair

We all know IE would be dead in the water if it wasn't automaticly in windows.. I don't see why this is such a big deal thou, they ship it they can chose what they want to ship it with. Forcing them to advertise for google is just silly....

Its not like companies doing illegal things is new. I'll have to look up detail later about the case.

Whether or not you think it fits the bill of being unfair is kind of irrelevant. The law apparently disagrees with you about the fairness issue. I certainly see your point but I think I still have to side with the court myself.

Regardless, this is still punishment for what they did back then. Court proceedings take time (and I imagine appeals and such) and the ruling of the court decided what the punishment would be. Doesn't matter if it was 1998 when it happened. If there was no punishment for unfair practices, there would be no reason for them to stop doing it.
