Reading Clock Speeds

Thread Starter
A bit of a newb here...I'm looking at the recommended specs for Borderlands 2, and this site recommends a 2.8gzh dual core processor: http://digitalbattle.com/borderlands-2-system-requirements/

According to Intel's site, the i7-3920xm sports a clock speed of 2.9ghz: http://ark.intel.com/products/64887

I can't imagine this really means the processor is just incrementally better than what's recommended for Borderlands 2. Am I reading the specs wrong?

Thanks

Thats recomended 2 cores 2 threads at 2.8ghz
The i7 is 4 cores 8 threads at 2.7ghz

Thats 5.6 vs 21.6. The i7 is more than 5 times faster

A 3920 is more than enough. The problem with saying things like "2.8GHz or better" is that a 2.8GHz Ivy CPU is vastly faster than say a 2.8GHz Conroe CPU, despite having the same clock speed (due to other improvements such as IPC). Don't worry about the 3920, its one of the fastest mobile chips available.

Thats not how it works at all. All other things being equal, a 2GHz dual core and a 2GHz quad are the same speed for a single thread. For multithreaded applications, of course, the quad is much faster because it can do multiple things at the same time. But its just doing more at the same time at the same speed (effectively faster, but you can't just multiply the numbers). In fact, many games don't take advantage of huge numbers of threads, so speed increase by adding cores will be minor compared to other applications.

Thanks for the explanation. Is 3920 overkill for playing current/upcoming games on high/max settings?

i completely understand anthony.
moar coars is good, but higher ipc is what its all about.
I personally i dont play many games here as of late but much rather bench a system due to steam.
but also remember that without enough cores the gpu is bottlenecked in games and benchmarks....
