i suppose it is a tall order but main thing though is it's not a impossible order to do. redface.gif

All I'm going to say is people should watch how high they say/predict these things will OC on air. A lot of people myself included felt pretty stupid when Ivy came out expecting 5ghz air to be commonplace.

But this is due to IVB's smaller process. PD, however, stays on the same lithography. However, you're still right - as likely as it is that PD will clock higher, hold your horses.

Is that a "bringing the heat to Ivy Bridge" or "Bringing the heat to Haswell"? I haven't read much about HW other than Intel bragging about the new-generation IGPU. Statistically matching/surpassing Ivy doesn't sound too hard to do provided AMD doesn't release SR as a beta part like they did with Zambezi. The latter alternative sounds a lot more difficult, unless Intel seriously rests on their laurels with improving Haswell's IPC.

SR is rumored to improve a variety of architectural stuff such as the front end, which would increase not only IPC but core scaling as well (in BD-based architectures' cases exclusively), as well as integrate the northbridge onto the CPU and provide a whole new platform complete with an vastly improved HyperTransport specification and all that jazz (AMD's chipsets have remained largely the same since 790FX). That would drastically improve AMD's viability when it comes to gaming PCs.

PD -> SR will, based on this information, be a HUGE difference compared to BD -> PD. We'll see if it can actually stand up to Haswell when the time (late 2013 or early 2014) comes.

The IPC point has gotten out of hand. Arguing back with "THAT'S JUST BECAUSE YORKFIELD HAS 10MB MORE L2 CACHE INTEL IS CHEATING" is just as legitimate. The difference is something like 5% and Deneb clocks higher. It's like, ignoring PCi-E 3.0, comparing a 4.5GHz 3770k with a 5GHz 2700k.

+rep for a great post and actually thinking this through.

Definitely; although PD is likely to clock at least as high as BD simply because unlike IB there aren't enough differences to really muck with the clock speed.

I agree..chips put off a lot of heat..not really going past 4 on air cooling

Q9550/Q9650 had no problem hitting the overclocks that were possible with Deneb. And you guys can keep downplaying the importance of IPC if you want but it has been the main reason why AMD has been behind intel for so many years. If competing chips have similar max overclocks (which has been the case) then IPC is very important.

But at what pricepoint?

Deneb had one issue, called too conservatively clocked NB. You rise the NB to 2.8GHz, and touch nothing else, and IPC comes well ahead Yorkfield.

2.8GHz was possible on almost all the spectrum of boards. 2.6GHz was something even my cat could attain, and it alone yielded amazing results.

If competing chips have similar max overclocks (which has been the case) then IPC is very important.
How many years would that be?

When I built my 775 rig the two competing chips were C2D's and Denebs at their price points. A Q9550 was $300 and a PII 955 was $170.

I bought a E2180 for $90 which I then upgraded to a E8400, years later, used for $100. At the time the E8400 was still $189.99 on newegg even though nehalem was released, and a Q9550 was $269.99.

IPC will only become important once we reach the limits of silicon.
