Quick PSU question for Mobo

Thread Starter
If I have a 20-pin running a 24-pin board, do I lose power to my PCI-E 16x slot and 1x slots? Or, is it just power to the 16x slot or is it to both?

It's a slow-low-end build for general TV/HTPC use.

mATX board - ECS GeForce 7050M-M v2
PSU is generic Sparkle 350w older 20-pin type

No PSU GPU, but I do have a TV tuner in the 1x slot that is recognized in device manager but not working when trying to be detected by WMC.

Mistake fixed

I'm stumped on that one..even the PSUs I've salvaged have been 24-pin.

No, +12v = +12v and +3.3v = +3.3v.

The traces are all connected anyways. The additional 4 pins are to reduce current load on the the other wires. A HTPC will not be drawing enough power for this to be an issue.

Being a cheap old PSU... they probably used the cheaper pins...... you can probably pull 12v@70-120w and 12v@60-80w.
Once again...

Yes, you lose power (not a very good description of what's happening but we'll leave it that way) to all PCIe slots, even so it shouldn't be an issue without a somewhat demanding discrete video card.

What specific TV Tuner do you have?

It's a WinTV-HVR-1800 (OEM version of the 1850 model - identical, roughly 2007 I think) that I picked up for $7.50 yesterday used.

After installing it, it instantly recognized without having to download drivers in Windows 7 HP (x86), I then ran an update to check for drivers and it installed one that was updated or newer. I then went to try and set it up in WMC and what I get when it tries to detect a signal is a blue-colored-screen (I can actually take a picture if need be).

So, I'm just wondering if it's the card or if it's a lack of power. thinking.gif

That's a very low power part, I wouldn't blame it on the PSU.

Check this and make sure you're doing everything correctly.

Hrm I have my next question handy then. tongue.gif

I did read that guide already and that got me thinking - do I need the install CD to make the device usable (and if so NP, I'll just buy the CD)?

I was under the impression I did not need the CD to make it work with Windows 7 WMC; but if I do then I'm SOL until I can get it.

I don't have any of the accessories or CD, just the card. I have a remote with a USB IR blaster that already works perfectly in WMC and I was hoping it would work just fine with the HVR too.

Alright thanks for all the help and answers. I think the TV card is bad, can't get it to do anything it is supposed to. Will have to try and replace it for another one at the place I got it from. Thanks everyone.

The downloaded drivers should be fine, you shouldn't need the CD.

You're welcome!
