Four RAM slots - Page 2

Thanks twocables could have sworn I had that on here somewhere...one caveat...I did add a good gfx and ergo the question if doing that would make any difference. It seems to me all of my knowledge is stemming from instant cratification based on the depth of my wallet.

And just because I have four slots doesn't mean that they have to have something in them if that makes sense. I'm sure it does to y'all but my basic outreach is to maximize what I have to the fullest extent and from what I am understanding anything over 8 is overkill no matter the cpu.

With memory, increasing the amount can improve the performance, but a point is reached where adding more doesn't do anything noticeable.  Take my system for example:  if I were to go back to 4 GB, then I wouldn't notice a difference, except I can't because that 4 GB kit is long gone.  :/  I mean, I never see more than 2.75 GB used (except Crytek made it sound like I'd need 8 GB lol).

You're also correct that the slots are just there in case you need them for memory upgrades.

You're welcome!

If you want it to show in your signature, then click "My Profile", scroll down to the Signature Editor, activate the editor, and then select your system from the far-left drop-down menu underneath the editor and then click Submit.

The best thing to do is use Task Manager (quick access: Ctrl+Shift+Esc) to monitor how much memory you are using for everything you do.  For games, Alt+Tab to Task Manager to see how much memory is being used, and was being used.  If you're using about 75% or more of your memory on average, then adding a little more might help the performance a little.

thanks two.. again you are making me smarter by the moment..lemme get this straight go to Task Mgr in game and have a look see as to what is happening and if it gets a little too close to or over lets say three quarters then go ahead and bump it up. That makes sense.

If your motherboard can support 16GB max, then it can support up to 4GB sticks in each slot. 8GB sticks won't work correctly.

4 sticks of RAM OCs fine, as you can see in my siggie. 2 sticks just OCs better. You have less stress on the memory controller and are less likely to get a badly OCing stick.

The other day a friend tried to tell me that his RAM was faster because he had 4 2 GB dimms instead of 2 4 GB dimms. He has a Phenom II 1055T, so with dual channel more dimms is actually hurting him when he OCs.

Anyway, I use process explorer to determine how much RAM I'm using. I let it run in the background for a few days and it keeps track of your total system commit. Just for reference, I typically use 3-5 GB, and my peak commit is 6.78 GB.

My advice is to buy 2 dimms of however much memory you need. If you think you need 4 GB, get 2 2 GB sticks. If you need more get more. This way in the future you'll still have 2 slots and you can add more when you need it.

On that note, if you add a second pair they don't have to be the same size if you install them in the right slots. You can get 2 2 GB sticks now and than say 2 4 GB sticks later, for a total of 12 GB. Everything will run fine and it'll do dual channel mode if they're in the right slots.

okay mme on that note and that is a very good point. Would there come a time when all four would be necessary or in my way of thinking is lets say with four slots now stay with me....

I I I I ok one and three from left to right is primary so two and four could be lets say 4 and 4 for a total of 10 in my case and that should suffice....correct?

my mistake I meant for a total of 14 duh...6+8 is what? yeah 14...math was never one of my strong points and here I was in civil engineering and land surveying...makes ya feel good doesn't it.

I think we're over-thinking this a little.  I mean, it's a pre-built.  How much memory is installed right now?  Which operating system is installed?  Like, if it's Windows 7, then is it 32-bit or 64-bit?

Regarding using something like Task Manager:  it would be best to have it open before starting any game so that you can Alt+Tab over to it during the most intense part of a game to see how much memory was being used.
