Buying new motherboard for (extreme?) overclocking! Help!

Thread Starter
I'm looking for a motherboard that is overclocking friendly and reliable.
I'm new to overclocking so forgive my ignorance.

First things first, is there a difference between 8+2 vs 6+2 Phase Count?
I was just looking a this chart for reference...
https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?key=0AgN1D79Joo7tdE9xMUFlMEVWeFhuckJEVF9aMmtpUFE&gid=3

Anyway my budget is ~$100.

My goal is to overclock my Phenom 955 C3 to at least 4.0GHZ with my Corsair H50 (assuming there is no temperature issue).

Here are my options so far...

GIGABYTE GA-970A-UD3 (8+2 Phase Count) $98

ASUS M5A97 EVO (6+2 Phase Count) $114

The M5A97 EVO will do the trick. I have had a 955 on this mobo at 4.0 Ghz. I was using the stock cooler with it though, I did not run it that fast for long. With your H50 you will be good to go. If you are OK with refurbished the Sabertooth would certainly be even better.

Either one of them can do the job if the CPU is good enough to clock that high. I recommend the Gigabyte, for the 8+2 and for the fact that if you ever want to upgrade, the M5A97's seem to be a tad fussy about FX processors. The UD3 is better in some respects, and it's cheaper; that makes it an easy choice for me.
