E8400 & EVGA 780I overclock issue.

I am new to the site, but i have been trolling the site for a long time now lol but decided to join cause i cant seem to get my E8400 to 4.0ghz, i tried the overclocking tutorial on here for it and i think i did something wrong, not sure. I run Prime95 and about 3 hours in it will freeze. I don't think cooling is an issue, CPU doesn't get over 68C with prime, Idles at 41C. here is what i have

I had an E8400 @ 4.0 GHz on an EVGA 680i SLI.  There are more options in your BIOS, but still I think the only change I can see so far is taking the CPU FSB up to 1.4V.

If that doesn't work, then maybe take the SSP to 1.45V.

If that doesn't work, then it may be the PSU because the PSU can be the culprit - especially if it's not delivering clean and stable power (and this one may be delivering the opposite of that thereby possibly making it impossible to stabilize 4GHz).

However, what core voltage are you seeing in CPU-Z when Prime95 is running?  It may still be too low yet.

Thanks for the pointers thumb.gif

While you're at work?  lol Awesome.  :)

I was just saying that in your original post, I see things that I didn't have in the EVGA 680i SLI's BIOS.

Oh ok, yea the 780I is really nice i gotta say. I am gonna replace the damn SB and NB ASAP that blowing hot air on my GPU is not cool.

Also it didnt like the 1800 FSB, so i set it to 1783 and it booted just fine, Its running threw prime95 at home. Having the gf check it every few hours to make sure it didnt freeze. I hope this works. I really would like it to be 4.0ghz lol.

I was actually thinking of getting a new cooler.

whatcha think of

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103065

with dual Scythe Fans? Part # DFS123812-3000

Yeah, these nForce boards are like space heaters!

I had to use 1778 MHz to get 4 GHz.  If I tried even 1780, then the board was like, "I don't think so, Tim!" (and my name is Tim, so that was kind of weird).

What are you using now for CPU cooling?

The 212 Plus is pretty nice.  I don't know what's good or bad for fans so I can't judge those, but I've heard good things about the 212 Plus!  As long as you fill those gaps with thermal paste that are in between the exposed pipes before you apply the thermal paste normally, it should be very good.

Yea it was like "hell no 1800 will not work ace, We are in safe mode now" lol

I am using this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835220033

With a silverstone high cfm. they don't make that fan anymore frown.gif. The scyths are pretty good fans, a friend of mine has 2 of them and the push a lot of air. I have a fan controler so if im watching a movie i can turn all these fans down, and just about every one of my fans is wired directly into a power socket. Not the psu. Less strain on the PSU for the 6 fans i have lol.

What do you mean by the gaps?

Well, it certainly looks kind of cool - and it's very low profile.  It must not be that bad if your max temp is only about 68.  I would expect worse from something this small!  That must be one awesome fan that's on it. lol  :)

Oh, I mean this:

They go a bit far and recommend lapping it, but I think that's just a bit extreme. lol  Sure it would help, but come on.  :)
