can you name one game that took more then 12 actual months of development that turn out better...

Thread Starter
well, ive just been reading alot of threads, and posts and so forth about games being a yearly thing (cod, bf now apparently, moh, AC, alot of sports games (for obvious reasons) and just so many other games that are 1 every 2 years, or so forth.

im just curious though, can you name any games that took more then 1 year to DEVELOPE?

alot of people dislike diablo 3, although i have it, i havent touched it in some time
skyrim i loved to death, and easily have way more time in it then i do in d3. skyrim took some time to make
TOR, people are still on the fence about (those who actually care)

and so forth, and yes IMO matters this thread is all about the talk

PLEASE NO GAME BASHING, or "general consensus" type of talk.

my main reason for this is, these days with developers the way they are, does 1 year or 5 years, even make a difference now on most games?

It all depends on the size and of the dev team. Obviously companies like EA can poop out games faster than an indie game company like spiderweb software.biggrin.gif

I absolutely love the phrasing tongue.gif

I don't think the amount of time is significant, its what you can do with the time. I think if you can get a lot done in 1 year because you have a lot of people, that's great. Or if it takes you a little longer but you do something amazing, that's great too. But if you just poop out games on a yearly schedule and you aren't doing much, that's a problem.

The best example honestly is Call of Duty, I've been a COD guy since COD 4. I've been playing MW3 a lot recently, but I'm thinking it might be the last one I buy. What makes it worse is that two studios alternate, so they have 2 years to make a game, and the game just isn't evolving anymore.

An example of the opposite direction is Assassin's Creed. The games come out every 1-2 years, but each one is a massive storyline and I felt like each one completely revamped the gameplay. It wasn't like COD where I've been playing the same engine and identical mechanics for 5 years.

Yes. The 1-2 year cycle means that they have very little R&D going into the game. Its basically using the map editor and scripting new stuff using old assets. Then maybe make a few new things, and tweak some config files (basically the CoD system). As a result, the game is usually terrible. Very little effort went into it, and its essentially a mod of the previous game.

On the other hand, lets look at Crysis. It took 3-4 years to develop, but they made an entirely new engine with entirely new tech, new assets, new story, new everything. As a result, it was really good. Same goes for HL1 -> HL2, and that sort.

However, as we've seen, long dev =//= good game. DNF took forever and was terrible. Meanwhile the STALKER series had 3 games in 3 years, all of which are amazing. They run different engines, updated assets (still a lot shared), new areas in each game, new story, new gameplay, etc.

%number% of days from announcement till release is not same %number% that took to develop the game.
Does not matter how long it took to develop game if idea was broken from start.
Does not matter how long it took to develop game if "make money without effort" is not balanced with game quality.
Does not matter how long it took to develop game if all that was done is re-skin previous version of game.
Does not matter how long it took to develop game if it is DLC/MOD style. Read crysis 2.
Does matter how long it took to develop game if it was needed to polish gameplay.
Does matter how long it took to develop game if it was needed to remove bugs.
Does matter how long it took to develop game if it was needed to achieve best combination of gameplay/story/visual.

Tons of titles that took more than 12 month to develop, tons of them terrible and tons of them good and some are epic. All definitions are subjective to person and if I decide that something is bad doesn't no actually mean it is bad and vice versa.

P.S. Skyrim is just terrible and worst game I played in 2012.
