Galaxy S3 AMOLED or EVO LTE IPS?

Thread Starter
Basically a toss up for me right now between these two phones. My wife has an S3 and I like it a lot but I am somewhat partial to HTC phones. Guess it doesn't matter anyway since I'll be rooting them. Can anyone comment on the IPS screen? I'm coming from a regular EVO.

Is the only thing updated on the evo being the screen? If so then id go for the s3. Way more updated and most likely more future proof.

The screen on the Evo LTE is better than the screen on the GSIII, but after that for the most part it is all about personal preference. The screen on the GSIII is no slouch it is very good, but the screen on the Evo LTE is great. It really comes down to personal preference. Sense or Touchwiz, removable battery vs non-removable battery etc.

No the screen was not the only thing updated. It's a faster phone, has 4G LTE, new version of sense etc. And that last part is just a joke. Both the 4G LTE and GSIII are even for the most part and both will be updated to jelly bean. Only thing the GSIII really has over the Evo LTE is it has more ram, but you never even really use all the ram so it's negligible at the moment.

I guess I prefer HTC vanilla over Samsung vanilla. Maybe that's just because I've used it more.

The Samsung Galaxy S III has the better and smoother UI, better Internet 3G/4G signal transmission, better reception and superior battery life.

The only thing that the HTC One X rivals the SGS III is the screen. The HTC One X has a good screen however it's all down to personal preference. Do you like more vibrant and eye-catchy colors (Super AMOLED HD wins) or do you want more accurate and neutral colors (IPS LCD wins)?

I would go with the Samsung Galaxy S III overall because the UI is excellent and unrivaled by other smartphones on the market. I noticed that the SGS III is much much smoother than the HTC One X and it's because Samsung has optimized their software whereas HTC didn't.

Oh and beware of the HTC One X terrible antenna quality. Some batches of the HTC One X have severe 3G/4G LTE and WiFi issues which means that you can't connect to the Internet.

We were pleased with the video capture on the HTC One X. But the Galaxy S III is just too good to compete with - the resolved detail in the Galaxy S III videos is incredible and they are very smooth with accurate colors.

Here's the Galaxy S III 1080p FullHD sample.

And the One X 1080p video sample.

There's also the bitrate to take into account. The HTC One X videos come out with a relatively low bitrate of about 10 Mbps, while the Galaxy S III's clips hover around the 17 Mbps mark. Both devices offer stereo sound recording during capture. Below we've lined up 720p video samples by each of the devices.

The lower bitrate is evident here as well. At 6Mbps the One X videos have about half the bitrate of those captured with the Galaxy S III. (Galaxy S3 is the winner)

Overall, it's hard to see beyond the Samsung I9300 Galaxy S III for the winner in the video recording category. The One X shoots decent videos, but those are nowhere near the S III standard.

According to those reviews the S3 looks better with image capturing and quality. However the UI is subjective, I played around with the S3 for a few hours and I don't like it much. I prefer sense, but I will admit I have used the older version of it for years compared to just a few hours with touch wiz.

I wonder how the settings differ when they did their test.

Thanks for your input.

Also when a direct comparison is made it needs to have better control. It was bright and sunny outside when they did the S3 review but dreary and overcast when they did the LTE review. I take those videos with a large grain of salt, that said however I would be interested in a direct comparison with better control.

PhoneDog's main reviewer, Aaron says that Samsung Galaxy S III has the smoothest and most fluid UI on the smartphone market.

The Samsung Galaxy S III is much better than the HTC One X.

The HTC One X lags and stutters a lot and I don't like that. It's just annoying to be honest. I thought HTC would have optimized their software and hardware before releasing their flagship phone.

HTC has disappointed once again frown.gif

Just stop....HTC has not disappointed. The One X and EVO LTE are great phones. They have flaws, but so does the GS3. I think my GS3 is great, but I'd have no problem using a One X or Evo LTE. You can always root them if sense isn't your style and go with something else. Stop making it seem like the GS3 is leaps and bounds better than the One X or Evo LTE, because it is not. All three phones are great and with jelly bean, they will hopefully see some very nice improvement. If people think the GS3 UI is smooth now just imagine how it will be on jelly bean. I'm sure HTC One X and Evo LTE users will see a very nice improvement in ui speed as well as being smoother.
