Need Help with Upgrading!

Thread Starter
I am going to be trying to upgrade my CPU because at the moment i cannot even play current games at good frames because my CPU maxes out at 100% and slows everything down.
I currently have a Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 (2.13GHz) that is on a HP Motherboard so it cannot be OC'd on it.
I have boiled everything down to 3 options on upgrading/sidegrading to have a better time with games.
Note: I will be Overclocking these CPUs.

My current specs that are mostly relevant are (if you want more, ask and you will receive);
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 (2.13GHz)
8GBs of DDR2 800MHz RAM
Crap HP Motherboard with no over clocking capabilities.
GeForce GTX 560

I could ...
1.) Buy a new Motherboard (and better RAM then my current RAM ) that isn't from HP so that i can OC my Core 2 Duo E6400 (2.13GHz) to around 3.0GHz. [ Total Price = ~$100.00 ]
or
2.) Buy a New CPU, Motherboard, and RAM to the i7-920 (2.66GHz), Corsair Vengeance 8GBs DDR3 1600MHz RAM, and a Motherboard with the 1366 Socket. [ Total Price = between $400.00 - $250.00]
or
3.) A better suggestion from you guys, because you all will probably have much better ideas then me.

Budget: less then $500.00.

Edit: Going to bed. Will reply in the morning.

Number 2.I know it seems more right now.But it's better to get it all done now and not worry about compatibility later.

Nighty-nite.

3. Get a Sandy bridge mobo + processor + RAM. If possible get a deal from microcenter for $50 off a mobo with purchase of a processor.

Option 2 seems the best but i would recommend getting a 3570k or 3770k

Or that

What's your GPU?

Here's what I got http://pcpartpicker.com/p/cq6y $410.95 with a $10 rebate on the cooler. Within your $500 budget (I actually picked with $400 in mind... so I think someone can do better)

IMO, if you have $500, it's best to get a new platform than upgrading the mobo. Since IMO, the E6400 is passed it's prime and an overclock will only give you at most 1yr more life in it. Use what I picked for you and add a case and a better cooler if inclined. Should serve you very well.

Edit: Forgot, I picked the UD3 because it's a decent mobo. You can go cheaper and get an Asrock (I have lots of headache on my 1st Asrock board so I'm not going to pick it tongue.gif) or go higher and pick an Asus.

Yea i fried my mother board a while back and had to get a crap one that was worse so that i could use my desktop this caused me to be set back money when i want to upgrade (if i ever upgrade lol), and yea sidegrading only puts u back on money when you wana upgrade because you more or less wasted that money, option 2 would be my suggestion simply because in the long run sidegrades just lose you money. got that wasted money only 2 words you ever need to know in life: Wasted Money. Lol but yea option 2.

Yeah i have thought about it all day and compared to the 920 way, i would have to get used (and probably OC'd) parts to get a lower price. I am going to do this, but I like Asrock so I might get their board.
