Better airflow this way?

Thread Starter
My case is a rusted monstrosity and has ZERO airflow. The only provision that it has is for a single 80mm fan, which is hardly making a difference. even with the side panels open, internal temps are really high and since hot air rises, there is not enough cooling to get it to escape. I can't afford a case right now and i was wondering if it would be better if i run my parts out of the case, entirely. What if i would keep the mobo on top of a cardboard box/anti-static sheet on a open disk. that way, the hot air can rise freely and escape. Would that be a good idea till i get a new case. Also, another reason for the high case temps is that the ambient temps here are REALLY high.

That should not be a problem. Remember, exposed mobos do not play nicely with small children and pets smile.gif

At this point your case is mainly being used for safety as a trade off for temperature. What exactly are the ambient temps where you live? Your case sounds like it will be doing more harm than good in terms of temperature but I will still need some solid temp measurements to really give you any sort of indication of whether it's worth it or not. If you have any pets I would persuade you on keeping your computer in a case, but if there aren't any real threats for your computer I would bring it out. If you do take it out of its case, place it around desk level since there will be less dust and less chance of stepping on it. I would also take one or two fans and point them in the same directions, pointing wherever the airflow is in your room.

Nope, no pets or small children in the house, just my mom and 80 year old grandmum biggrin.gif. Room temps here are hovering around the 30-35 mark. My assembly temps are 40, graphics card idling at 49c with 58% on the fan.

ASsuming its a tower case we are talking about id lay the case on its side and leave of the side panel. That way it gets a little protection and heat and still escape.

I've tried that. Made no difference, not in the least.

What about removing the front 5.25 bays and putting a fan in there? It looks like you need as much intake as possible. You should look at getting a desk fan to put inside your case also. Or just save up $30 and get a new case altogether.

Got no extra fans to spare ATM frown.gif. I'm currently saving up for a Storm Trooper. So i figured i'd take the out-of-the-case route for the time being. Damned case and ambient temps.

and close the side door. but before you do, dust the inside of the case and manage the cables the best you can.
