Right now i'm stuck between two GPUs to buy.

An NVidia GTX 480 or a Radeon 7850.

Both around $219.

Realistically, which is better??

HD 7850 is the better option. overclocks easily to 1.2 Ghz and GTX 580 performance while drawing less power , running cooler and quieter. Even overclocked to 1.2 Ghz HD 7850 draws less than 150w. here is a HD 7850 (1 Ghz) review

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Powercolor/HD_7850_PCS_Plus/31.html

GTX 480 - 44.3
HD 7850 (1 Ghz) - 45.4
HD 7870 (1 Ghz) - 49.5
HD 7850 (1.24 Ghz) - 50.2
GTX 580 - 51.7

http://www.anandtech.com/show/5625/amd-radeon-hd-7870-ghz-edition-radeon-hd-7850-review-rounding-out-southern-islands/19

HD 7850 (1050) performs as fast as GTX 580 in few games . At 1.2 Ghz HD 7850 will match GTX 580 clearly across the board.

MSI HD 7850 Twin frozr is a good option for USD 210 after rebate.

7850 hands down, And i am an ex 480 owner.

7850 overclocked is as fast if not faster, runs much cooler and uses alot less electricity, thumb.gif

Why would you consider a GTX 480 at all compared to a HD 7850? It's 2 years old card loud, inefficient video card vs a 4 month old card, quiet, power efficient card with overclocking headroom,

I am disappointed with this not beginning with "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times"

In all honesty though, the 7850 is a way better buy.

AMD owns midrange cards at the moment, at least until the GTX660.

The 480 may seem terrible now, but go back those 2 years ago. That card was a power house, and it still considerably is!
It compares to a 7850 in standard power but as mentioned the 7850 is at a lower wattage use and alot quieter than the 480.
I just took the 7850 for granted because i've read more about the 480 than the 7850.
