GTX 470 Driver Crashes - Running out of ideas

Thread Starter
Alright, so my graphics drivers have been crashing randomly for some time now. It happens whether I'm browsing the web, playing games or just idling on my desktop. No system resets, BSOD, etc., just a black screen and an alert that the driver has recovered. Sometimes it'll go for days without crashing, other times it'll happen a couple of times in one day. I haven't done any overclocking, all of my BIOS settings check out and temps are normal across the board.

My current setup is:

Intel Q6600 2.4GHz
EVGA GTX 470
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L
4GB OCZ Reaper DDR2-800
Corsair TX750 750W

I've tried:

  • Countless different driver versions, clean installs each time (following BradleyW's guide).
    • 285.62
    • 295.73
    • 301.42
  • A clean install of Windows (after swapping hardware ↓).
  • Swapped CPU and motherboard, previously suspecting my old Phenom II X3 720 and Gigabyte MA-790X-UD4P to be the problem.
  • Tried both PCI-e slots on the UD4P.
  • 12 hours of Memtest86+, no errors.
  • Raised GPU voltages a bit.
  • RMA’d the GTX 470, swapped to a GTX 460 768MB; same problem with the old 470, new 470 and the 460.

As the title says, I'm running out of ideas here. I can't think of anything else besides RMA'ing the PSU and since that'll leave me without a PC for a few weeks, I'd like to get others' opinions first.

It sounds like its running hot, or you have psu connection problems. Check cabling. Eventually run your computer without chassis cover to make ventilation better.

My 460gtx does this from time to time. Usually when running 65C or higher for a while. It actually happened last week and when I opened Afterburner it showed 70C was the last temp and the usage spiked to +300% right when it crashed. But you say your temps are normal so what exactly is normal?

45C idle, ~75C under load. I don't remember what the 460's were, but it ran significantly cooler and I probably would have noticed if it was exceeding safe temps.

I just can't imagine the problem is temp related considering it crashes just sitting on the desktop at ~45C.

I had a similar issue with my 470's.. it turned out to be totally driver based. For me I found 285.62 to be where my system was stable. Since you listed those as drivers you've tried with no luck i'd suggest going back to 275.33. That's the last WHQL driver that I upgraded to without any issues before I found stability in 285.62. Something else you might look into, see what the voltage settings are in Afterburner, and maybe bump it up a notch or 2. I used to get those driver kernel crashes all the time when i was overclocking and didn't add enough voltage. So even if you card is stock, it might not be getting enough voltage. Could be the firmware of the card, or your power supply, but it can't hurt to try a lil voltage bump at stock speeds.

Installed 275.33 and bumped the voltage a bit, so we'll see how that goes. Thanks.

Alright, the crashed continued after trying out 275.33 drivers, so I just went ahead and borrowed another PSU to test. I haven't crashed yet, but YouTube isn't displaying correctly, which I always assumed was related to this issue.

I'm sure I'll crash here eventually, even with this new PSU.

I'm officially lost as to what to do next. Short of building an entirely new PC from scratch, I have tried it all.
