I've heard and read that the iGPU can actually encode/decode faster than the CPU itself. I convert alot of videos from .avi to .mp4 and I use HandBrake to do so.

Since I have a 3770K, I was wondering if I can use the iGPU to accelerate this process, because even with the processor running at 4.6 GHz, it takes 90 minutes to convert a 20 minute video. Bitrate is 200K so it's a very large file, still, I'd like to shorten this time.

So is what I'm trying to do possible? Using iGPU to convert media files that is.

I haven't looked into iGPU, but sounds possible. One of the guys here in the security department runs his brute force attack codes using his GPU rather than a CPU, guess he's getting more processing power out of a good gpu

Right now I think the only 2 programs that support this (Intel Quicksync technology) are media converter and mediaespresso. They both have a demo version available, and I was able to convert a 11GB blu ray rip of avatar to ipod resolutions in about 7 minutes.

I use H.264 compression on handbrake. I'm gonna try a few of these programs.

I'm just wondering if I should overclock the iGPU for even better performance. Worth a shot.

The igpu actually can be overclocked quite a bit. Unfortunately, I was too stupid to convert the same file twice at different clock speeds, so I can't comment on how much overclocking actually helps

Okay, I'm a bit concerned about something I just read on that Wikipedia article:

"Quick Sync, like other hardware accelerated video encoding technologies, gives lower quality results than with CPU only encoders. Speed is prioritized over quality"

I need maximum quality, and apparenty Quick Sync doesn't do that.

In my opinion, the results looked great. But, you could always try out one of the free demos, see if it's good enough for you, and if it's not, uninstall the demo.

Results are in. It took iGPU (Quick Sync) to render a certain file in 13 seconds at default clocks (1150 MHz). When overclocked to 1650 MHz, that time came down to 10 seconds. It doesn't scale as good as a CPU when overclocked, but it does perform better.
