I have been on this site for no longer than 30 minutes and I know that you guys can help me more than anyone else. I am on summer break and I would like to make it a productive one. I already know Visual Basic. I took an entire years worth of class time learning that language. Easy as pie. I would like to learn Java next..but I have no idea where to start. Can you professionals help me out here? Where do I go? What do I read? A reply would be greatly appreciated!

I would Google Java Tutorials and find a good site that teaches the information well. You can always pick up a textbook as well if you need a hard copy of the material. The one I used for college is "Data Structures & Problem Solving Using Java" by Weiss. It's a pretty good book.
To actually create Java code, I would grab Eclipse.

See fourth link in my sig. Scroll to Java. The list isn't complete but the e-book I linked to is one of the best introductory texts to Java I've read.
To start programming, you need to download JDK (google it) and then get any text editor with which you can write code and execute it from the command line. Or you could alternatively get the Eclipse IDE.

Personally, for starting out I'd use Jgrasp. I used it for my javascript class at college this year and our teachers recommended it because the debugging interface is much better than eclipse's. Eclipse however has lots of neat shortcuts that make programming much easier. Personally, I'd learn how to use the language correctly without external help and once you know how to debug your code properly, make the switch.
As far as learning the languages, there's lots of free videos.
I would personally recommend this book for learning: http://www.amazon.com/Building-Java-Programs-Approach-Edition/dp/0136091814/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1342625229&sr=8-1&keywords=java+back+to+basics+approach
It's what we used to learn Java at my school. It's an object late approach to javascript and it's really well laid out and everything the book teaches you is incremental, easy to understand and builds on itself over time giving you a well rounded view of javascript.
(I got mine for free online from some textbook downloading website, I'm sure there are copies floating around the net if you don't want to shell out 90 bucks).
http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Java_tutorial
There's also wikis like this one I've seen that offer much in the same material as a textbook but for free.

^^^This.
I took a Java class in the spring and we used Java How to Program 9th Edition. http://www.amazon.com/Program-early-objects-Edition-Deitel/dp/0132575663/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1342633107&sr=8-2&keywords=java+how+to+program
It helped me a bunch and I ended up relying on this book more for help than my professor. Although, it is pricey, so I'm sure you could find cheaper alternatives.
Also, there's a Youtube channel, called TheNewBoston, and the videos go over a lot of Java aspects from beginner all the way to advance topics. This also really helped me out.

For an IDE I would recommend NetBeans. I have both Eclipse and NetBeans installed and I regularly use the latter.

Fantastic book. We too used that book in my college Java class.
