OCing the 580 GTX - Page 2

Thread Starter
My fans are on 85, which is the max it'll let me in MSI afterburner. I was running the burn in on GL2 mode, gonna let it go to D3D11. Are my stress test settings not correct? These temps are insane.. my room is about 73f right now.

hmmmm, well is your 580 underneath a refrence card? if so just follow the guide I posted a while ago http://www.overclock.net/t/1218167/overclocking-guide-for-noobs-on-their-4xx-or-5xx-series-cards/0_100 here, not the best but at the time I couldn't find one.

Those cards are fine to 90C at load. I think they have a cutoff limit at 105C or something like that. Mine hit 80 regularly while playing BF3, but it is also summertime here and 80 degrees in my room. Your temps are fine but I would not want them to exceed 90C. What are your fans speeds set to?

They are not reference cards I don't think, they're the MSI twin frozrs. These cards were advertised to be "19c" under the reference cards, which I now think is pure bull tongue.gif. I'm running kombuster right now with D3D11, AA off and it's sitting at around 69 degrees for card 1, 61 for card 2.. why is one card so much hotter :S. Thank you for the guide, I will read it now.

they shut off at 105 but the throttle heavily at just 95 and if you are running 90 then you have very little room for a temp spike and with voltages that high you have the possibility to dammage the GPU at those temps...

Yes, reference cards have the ref pcb and they have a stock cooler.
One can tell the difference easily between ref and non ref cards.

Top Ref
Bottom Non-Ref

Thanks for the replies, so in a nut shell, i got screwed with 2 lemons for GPUs. I shouldn't be getting these temps at this generous OC, someone please give it to me straight haha frown.gif

My fans are at 85%, my voltages are stock as of right now. Temps sit anywhere from 30-34 idle, 100% load in Kombuster gets me to 69, spiking to 80 on thefirst card, the second card is about 4-5 degrees cooler.

You can always apply a new set of TIM, no GTX 580 should get those temps, every single on I have seen can do 900MHz on the stock cooler.

I see, haven't taking apart these babies yet, are they difficult to get apart? And should I use 99% isopro to rub away the old gel?

they are not hard to take apart if you have a Phillips screw driver and yes use the alcohol, however the metal heat-sink may require some force to remove because TIM has a habit of acting like glue on the 580s
