Replacement 80mm Silent Fan for PSU

Thread Starter
The 80 mm fan in my P.O.S. PSU in my HTPC is so loud that I can hear it 2m away. I've already replaced the CPU cooler with a scythe shuriken rev2 and the other case fans are quiet.

I tried disconnecting it but unfortunately it ran far too hot so I resoldered the fan back on. Will any silent 80mm fan work (got any recommendations?) and if so how would I go about soldering it on as there are only 2 connections? I'm guessing the yellow cable should be removed and the red to positive and black to negative but you never know.

Any help is appreciated. biggrin.gif

You can try just about any fan out there. As for silent and powerful I've had good luck with the Noctua NF-B8; that model has a PWM version as well.

What to remember is the red is the positive, black is ground and yellow is the sensor wire. I haven't soldered any into a board before, but if you can figure out how it's supposed to flow, then that's the arrangement found in most fans.

If the board only wants two wires (lead and ground) then perhaps one of Yate's DC fans would work. The 80x80x10 are the most quiet; but I have no idea how to order them.

Either way good luck!

Thanks! I always hear good things about Noctua so will probably go that route as they're only £7 although having said that I might check eBay to see if I can get something cheaper as I reckon the PSU itself is only worth about £5 or less.

I was checking eBay and saw this, looks like I could run the PWM line to a motherboard header and control it that way if needs be. 388

Yeah, not sure about Yate Loon's selling strategy but I think they make so many specialist fans for appliances that they don't sell everything. Seems annoying at the very least.

GUESS THAT@S SORTED THEN. thumb.gif

You're trying to fix a psu that's worth less than five quid?

And you care about this htpc?

I see your point but what I mean is that it's not worth selling as I won't get a decent price for it. It's not broken as it still provides adequate power for my system and will probably still cope if I add a graphics card but it is noisy. If I can spend £5-10 and eliminate the loud fan noise then I would rather that than £40-50+ on a new silent PSU that would make the case too cramped and may run hot as a result.

and yes, I DO care about this HTPC which is why I want to replace the fan in the first place.

Just saying, if you care about the htpc, invest in a reliable quiet modular psu. Using a quieter fan may not provide enough CFM to keep the psu cool enough and cause it to fail prematurely. I've been there. Swapped out a noisy ocz psu fan for a quiet corsair fan and 7 mo later the psu bit the big one.

Sorry for dredging up an old topic but I felt i should post the results. I went for an Arctic Cooling F8 and have the yellow PWM wire in the connector bundled up in the PSU. It's been about 2-3 weeks and haven't had any problems and its a fair bit quieter too.
It still makes some noise because (I think) the PSU heatsink is dated (just a simple machined block of aluminium) so a little noise is generated as the air passes over it and some turbulence is caused. Guess quiet PSUs must have aerodynamic heatsinks - just thought that was interesting smile.gif
