Space and Turn-based RPG games?

I recently bought Civilizations 5 and am beginning to enjoy turn based strategy. I have kept my attention on games like Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity ($5 on Steam) and Endless Space. I need some opinions, however, on what Space-based strategy game would be best. Endless Space seems appealing because you can colonize many different star systems and ship customization looks spectacular, but Sins of a Solar Empire looks like much better combat.

What should I get? Or do you guys have an even better suggestion? (Please, no Masters of Orion 1 or 2. Played it before and that game frustrates me)

Sins is not a turn-based game. It's technically a "real-time 4X". If you want a turn-based space strategy game for cheap, check out Stardock's previous game, Galactic Civilizations II (currently half-off during the summer sale).

My all-time favorite science-fiction-themed turn-based strategy game is Alpha Centauri, which has a lot in common with the rest of the Civ games. If GOG offered the Alien Crossfire expansion, I'd give this one an "instabuy" recommendation.

Sorry, I thought Sins was a turn based redface.gif

Alpha Centauri looks great but that Alien expansion isn't available. I am leaning towards Galactic Civilizations 2. Looks fantastic.

I'd say Trinity for $5 is a great deal. Unfortunately I haven't tried Sins: Rebellion or Endless Space yet so I can't give you any advice on those but I say try Trinity (it's only 5 bucks after all) and if you like it then look into Rebellion.

Itching to try Endless Space myself however.

Endless space has scatterbrain reviews. Some people adored it, and some people thought it was a knockoff of Masters of Orion. So, they hated it as a result.

Edit: I got Galactic Civilizations 2. I still have 53 bucks in my Steam Wallet and am willing to try Endless Space. Anyone have any thoughts?

I bought and played 3 games of "endless space" this weekend. Its not bad a kind of Master of Orion type game. I played all three games on easy mode and lost two games and one game became unstable and unplayable. I spent several hours playing and his a pretty developed research tree. The main complaint I have is when your developing a ship it lets you design a ship whether you have a needed resource or not. But if you don't have a resource it will not let you build the said ship. Other than it was a cool time sink.

Agreed, Endless Space is pretty addicting as it is, and the devs have gone on record saying that they plan on adding additional features in free patches over the next 6 months to a year.

The other reason I support it is that the devs actually took fan responses during the open beta into account during the final phase of development using an organized polling system on their website. I believe this is actually still ongoing in relation to the future developments.

Is it incredibly innovative? No. Does it give you good gameplay with an easy to use UI? Yes, and that's what I think matters.

Check out Space Empires V and IV (I personally like IV a bit more)

Edit: Its definately turn based, modular ships where you can put anything (within size limits) within a hull including oversize weapons, tech tree is AWESOME all the way to the ability to create ringworls, nuke entire starsystems, use biological warfare, etc. AI is pretty decent as well and can give you some trouble.

Holy Mother of Snap.

Alpha Centauri + SMACX is on sale at Amazon for $5.49.

Physical disk, not download. There's another $4 charge for shipping.

Still... that's less than $10 for the one of the greatest turn-based strategy games of all time.
