The only real proven performers for C2D and C2 Extreme right now are the Intel 975X & 965 chipsets. DFI should have their mobo based on the ATI RD600 chipset that should dominate the field, but again, it's not released to the public yet and as such, I consider unproven.
The x6800/QX6700 have an unlocked multiplier so that the FSB problems plaguing everyone else with locked multi don't affect him

Yes but he has to raise the FSB to get the RAM you advised him to get at maximum speeds.

Well not specifically the RAM you told him to get, but any RAM. (If he even needs it at 1000+ anyway)

Limiting your memory frequency and trying to make it up with multipliers is asinine, as the whole point of getting the high end CPU is to maximize performance.

Memory frequency = performance, pure and simple.

Nvidia chipsets are maxing out at around 350-375, so while he may not be able to run at 450 or whatever else Intel is maxing out on he can still use his 2x7900GTX

He could just wait for 680i

Geforce 8800 series with DX10 launches Nov. 8. Don't know if you can actually purchase a card on that date, though...
