Displayport Flicker

Thread Starter
I did a search, and came across this:
http://www.overclock.net/t/1192266/displayport-flicker-on-monitors/20
Specifically Ken1649's post on how the clocks for DVI and DP are different. I find this hard to believe that AMD/ATI would have such lack of over sight to not fix or address this. Is there still no solution? Has firmware or drivers been updated to fix this? I suppose my real question is, is it at all possible to combine DVI with DP?

Background information:
I'm trying to run 3 monitors off one video card, the center monitor (u3011) is flickering and switching to black when connected via displayport. I'm running Win7 SP1 and my GPU is a MSI HD5830. My two other monitors (2007FP) are connected via DVI.

One possible solution that I thought of was to simply buy a cheap GPU to slot in my computer to run the third display. That way, all three monitors would be running on DVI thus bypassing this clocking issue. I'd rather not add needless heat to my system if there is a reasonable fix for this.

Thanks.

I fixed it by using mini DP -> DVI adapters so that all monitors are on DVI. I purchased the exact same ones listed in that thread you linked smile.gif

Ran a little experiment where I have only my center monitor on DP, nothing else connect, and the damn thing still flickers. What's broken here, the display's DP connection, the DP cable, the GPU? I'm close to just buying a 30 dollar GPU to slot in that's dedicated only for running my third on DVI...

Ah right... I did the same experiment and no flicker...
The DP -> DVI adapter has probably a 90% chance of fixing it. If that is cheaper than a second GPU, give that a shot. If it doesn't then you've got an adapter to use anyway! Besides that won't introduce other things like additional heat/power consumption.

The DP cable also knocked out my sound card. It took me 2 hours to get it working again. I'm totally done with this. Ugh, gonna order another GPU now. In the near future I will upgrade my GPU, thinking of getting the GTX 670. Do Nvidia cards suffer from the same clock issues?
The problem has nothing to do with DisplayPort. The problem is AMD/ATI cards flicker when the memory clock changes, and sometimes it gets stuck in this mode where it's constantly changing clock states with every little change on the screen. The only way to work around this problem is to make sure the memory clock never changes.

You can either create a CCC profile and edit the profile's XML file so the memory clocks are always the same, but this won't allow you to set the memory clock for when video acceleration is active, or you can edit the BIOS using Radeon BIOS Editor and set the memory clocks to be the same across all clock states, then flash the BIOS. Honestly, I find it easier to edit the BIOS so you never have to worry about it again, but there's always that small chance you could brick the card.

Search Google for "powerplay flicker" for more information.

excuse my ignorance, but why is it that when I run two monitors with DVI there are no issues. Or that when I run only one monitor with displayport there's flickering?
I have no idea. Most people that encountered the flickering problem only mentioned it happening with a certain monitor on a multi-monitor setup, but for me, the problem happened even with a single monitor regardless of the port. In both cases, the flicker happens when the memory clock changes. Making sure the memory clock doesn't change solves the problem.

It's also possible we're talking about two different problems, but I'm not aware of any other flickering problem. I didn't have any other issues with DisplayPort.

My issue wasn't due to memory clocks at all frown.gif Although I am aware of the flicker you get when the clocks change *cough* loading flash videos on my 5750 *cough*

Hmm. Well i tried to do the CCC profil trick, and it made it even worse. The system wouldn't even recognize my center monitor. I quickly went back to default factory settings, and then back to just 2 screen with DVI. I think i'm gonna throw in the towel on this and just wait until I upgrade to GTX 670s. I'm tired of ATi's ****ty drivers.
