I'd also argue against your second point. 2-3 smaller monitors require more graphical oomph than a 27"/30" does. (1920x1080)x3 ~6 Megapixels vs 2560x1600 ~4 Megapixels.
Edit: As far as a single large monitor vs. an Eyefinity-like setup goes, that's all personal preference.
whatever you're gonna need to run a 30" is what you're gonna need to run 3x24".

It's a bit late in the game for a U3011. Get one for around $7-850 if you need one.

yea i had a U2711 and loved it but ended up selling cause i already had 2 30 inch dells..now i finally got the 3rd and i definately think the bigger screen is worth it..rez is nice on both, but the 30 inch screen really is a big difference from the 27. You also dont really need to use aa at the higher rez as the edges are already smooth which is bonus too:)

No... that simply isn't true. A multi-monitor 1080p setup requires significantly more than a 30" 1600p setup. Either way, your point was that the cost to run a 30" setup continues to get more and more expensive, and that you would opt for a 3 monitor display instead, which would actually cost more...
