I'd also argue against your second point. 2-3 smaller monitors require more graphical oomph than a 27"/30" does. (1920x1080)x3 ~6 Megapixels vs 2560x1600 ~4 Megapixels.
Edit: As far as a single large monitor vs. an Eyefinity-like setup goes, that's all personal preference.
