This is discouraging for me because I am upgrading to conroe and very worried because I will be using the stock fan/heatsink. I will put on AS5 but still now I am worried because I intend to OC.

I believe most fo the tests for overclocking on the stock HSF were when the assumption was that 85c was acceptable for the C2Ds. I seriously doubt that one can overclock to 3.2Ghz on the stock HSF and be under 55c at full load....unless they live in Greenland and the computer is outside

As always, your experience may vary, and there's no reason not to try it if you need to. However, you can spend very little on an aftermarket cooler and still get marked improvement over the stock HSF. Even an open box Scythe KATANA for about $20 would be a big improvement over stock.......if you truely want to overclock, using the stock HSF is not a good plan.

Thread Starter
yeah i heard that the stock thermal compound on the Arctic Cooling 7 was good, so I had planned on leaving it on.

EDIT: To ClaytonCallihan...dont use the stock fan, breark out the wallet and pay the $20 for the Arctic Cooling 7 at Monarch

I've been able to run around 3.0-3.3GHZ on the stock heat sink at full load

all depends on how cool I keep the room if I leave teh a/c on I can do 3.0

but if I keep the room around 70* I can get around 3.2

but then again I don't know how much my ram is holding me back either as I am using chinsy 667 ram from centon.

The 85C listed in Core Temp is no more than just a reference number provided by the processor used in conjunction with another number Delta (provided by another Model Specific Register) to calculate the actual core temperature. It has absolutely no meaning to us.

As the_manual has stated repeatedly, the max "safe" temperature for C2D to prevent hardware damage is 60.1C. Overclocking with more voltage going through the processor warrants a even lower core temperature. That is why it is a good idea to keep it below 55C or even lower.
