upgrading to xbox slim

Thread Starter 
so my girlfriend decided to be nice and get me a new xbox if she could have my old one. of course i sad yeah lol. so now im trying to back up all 90GB worth of data on the 120GB xbox HDD. is there a way i can throw it on my computer and then throw it on my new xbox which i wont have until about 7pm here? I know there is xplorer360 but this is the first time using it.

so could someone be nice enough to give me a crash course or point me to a guide?

Main problem is the fact that 3 partitions are listed. i know thats normal but why and what one has my game saves?
can i just hit back up and throw it on the new one and have everything or no? i have a sata/ide block to USB and i also have the transfer cable for the xbox drive.

I would try the backup option first. Don't forget you can also transfer the save files to a flash drive from the 360, then just transfer them onto the new one from there.

I know the bulk of my storage is installed/downloaded games, so I don't mind doing that over again, and save files are really the only main other thing. (Besides gamertag, which you recover on the new one)

Don't forget to license transfer your content.

ok cool. same here with the data. was going to delete the game installs but with xplorer360 it takes up all the space anyways...

and thanks for the reminder lol. didnt even click with me about the DRM and the license.

the guide below helped me get my 4gb slim to a 320gb, it shows how to flash a larger (approved WD) drive, also how to restore your previous files from an old drive using 360 explorer

From what I remember, Gamestop does not allow refunds. They only give back in-store credit. That's how my experiences have been lately.

As for backing up, if you want some risky business, you could try to remove the HDD from the casing and connect it to your PC via SATA and try backing up that way I think. Dunno if that will actually work though hahha.

FYI, if she is buying the 250 GB model and you dont need all that storage, you can just remove your hdd out of the case and re-use it with the slim (buy the 4gb and save the cash)

you can just pop the bare drive into the slot (line up the sata ports)... or if you want to make it fit pro, buy one of these cases and you dont even have to bother with transferring anything.
