Tracing location from IP Address, it is possible ?

Hello.

There is a guy that I chat over the internet but I am unsure if it is good to trust him. I have his IP Address and I discovered this website: http://ipgp.net and I was wondering if ir works and I can get the location from IP address to test if what he is saying is true. What do you think about this ?

I think sites like that generally work. However, he could be using his neighbours IP, a randoms, programs like TOR which change/ obscure IP addresses, or using something like Tails Linux.

Do it, use it to form the basis of your investigation. However, don't decide anything based solely off of this information.

Those two things are typically mutually exclusive.

Usually the hostname of hops in a traceroute will include location/city information.

If it's worth asking if you can trust someone I probably wouldn't engage in any potentially risky behavior with some random person.

Well, for me its showing my Proxy IP not home IP, so its only accurate if you have his true IP.
Download nmap and run a zenmap scan against his IP. This will show you the open ports he has and give you an idea as to whether it's his IP or a proxy. (eg typical home networks won't have listening sockets on 22, 80 nor 443). Again, this is only a guide -not proof- as some nerds do have home servers.

Also run a whois against the IP: http://whois.domaintools.com/
This will tell you who owns the IP (eg an ISP or hosting service. if the former, then it's a home IP. If the latter then it's probably a proxy)

nmap is a security tool that can scan for open ports on a network, zenmap is essentially a GUI for nmap. I would go with his second suggestion for simplicity sake.
