Hi all, currently i remote desktop into my machine but i figured id would be nice on occasion to have access to my files (say if i wanted to want a tv show remotely) so i have been trying to find some good vpn software to accomplish that. any suggestions?

Teamviewer can work, but latency might give you lag when watching that vid from a different location.

Access files in which sense tho, transfer to the computer you're at and watch? or just watch without transfering, like streaming?

Are you running Windows? It would be easy if your running Linux or OS X as you could just use SSH for ad hoc tunnels and remote file systems. But Windows doesn't really come with anything that sophisticated unfortunately.
Also, check out Subsonic before looking into VLC. Subsonic is easily the best music and video streaming service I've used. It's like Spotify but works against your own media collection
