[PA] Ouya Creator Julie Uhrman Answers Community Questions

Quote:
Vague answers were the order of the day over at Kotaku as Ouya’s Julie Uhrman stopped by for a little Q&A with the sites community. While I really appreciated the fact that Julie offered up some of her time to address concerns regarding her new console, she really didn’t answer a single question in anything but vague public relations speak,

Ha I was about to say the same thing especially with this portion:

Question: You mentioned you are talking to AAA publishers about bringing current and new AAA content to OUYA. How do you plan to bring AAA titles with the quality of say Assassin’s Creed, Mass Effect, Final Fantasy, etc. to the platform? Can the hardware even handle these types of games? Will they be scaled down ports?

Uhrman’s Answer: Our hardware can handle great gameplay.

Question Follow-Up: Doesn’t really answer my question. my iphone can handle great gameplay. How do you plan to bring AAA titles to the platform and still keep the quality that people expect form a AAA game?

Question: Will there be advertisements on the home screen? Will games be allowed to have blatant, billboard style advertisements during gameplay?

Uhrman’s Answer: OUYA will not have advertisements.

At least there's that. thumb.gif

Question: “We are gamers. We really respect the talent of game designers and want to protect their intellectual property. All paid content on OUYA will require authentication with our servers. “

After seeing this answer, I have to ask a more probing question here. When you say “all paid content… will require authentication”, do you mean a one-time “activation” after which you can play offline, similar to Steam? Or will OUYA require an always-on internet connection, similar to Ubisoft’s DRM?

Uhrman’s Answer (or Non-Answer if you prefer): OUYA is designed to be connected to the Internet. Each time you buy a piece of content you will need to authenticate.

Sounds like "one time" authentication to me.

Sounds like the system is also going to use Always Online DRM, which would suck for many people. I don't have an issue with a single piece of software requiring a connection, when that one piece is used, but an entire system? That sounds a bit funky, and so far I have been a big supporter of this thing.

Wow, reading this I am glad I didn't back it. Sounds like they are going in a pretty crappy direction. If they want to really create an open console why insist on free to play? Why insist on controlling the content with server check-in or always online requirements? If this thing is so open why so much control? Why not just let developers charge what they want.

Sounds very sketchy.

Sounds like, sure, but that answer is designed to suggest one thing while never actually saying anything. I don't trust those type of statements.

The system will probably check authentication on any app you install, to prevent people from putting APKs on flash drives and avoiding payment. I think what is going to happen is the system itself will only require authentication at install, but a game may or may not require authentication when you play; its up to the game developer. At least, I think that is why she was being a little vague and not flat out saying all games will be playable offline. I guess we'll know for sure in a few months when the first shipments start.
