You can upgrade the RAM and use a CF to IDE44 adapter and run pfSense.

I have a Firebox II with working front LEDs. I'm running pfSense 2.

I also replaced the 5V fans with 12V to shut it up. Also put some copper heatsinks on the NICs.

No need to go overboard on the CF. pfSense comes in different sizes so you just buy what you need. I use a 512MB and used the pfSense that's 512MB. The system can't handle more than a 8Gb HDD.

Just a heads up, it's gonna take some time to get the HDD settings right, since it doesn't auto detect. Also get yourself a PCI video card so you can change the BIOS settings.

thanks for the heads up and ill buy the 4gb one i think the only ones they sell at the store where i was looking at them are the wear leveling CF for cameras and they have either 4 or 8gb high speed 25mb/s.

i was also planing on maybe messing around with dd-wrt i was only planning on the overboard CF cause of add-on's and all to make sure i had enough space for anything it could need.

i just happen to have a standard pci vga card sitting here biggrin.gif i might buy a cf reader too that way i can just plug it into my desktop or laptop and look at all the info so i can know what all the settings should be on the firebox tongue.gif

i just made a deal to buy a Cisco Catalyst 3500 XL to go with the firebox 3 this is going to be a GREAT upgrade from a netgear wnr3300 router (although ill still be using it for wireless clients to forward DHCP to the cisco catalyst )

ok well i guess this is actually a firebox 2 not 3

would you mind explaining this a little?

this one seems to be missing memory and CF card i got the memory (happening to have some sitting here) and im going to go buy a CF for it but i dont see how the VGA card helps when it has not form of input for a keyboard or anything, also if it helps any i have experience with telnet SSH and things like that along with modding routers and my laptop has a COM port on it

They're pretty much the same. I think the Firebox II has a faster processor.

The firebox II, like mine, takes PC133 RAM. I put 256MB up from 64MB. They don't have a CF interface, like I said earlier I used a CF to IDE44 adapter. They're about $1-$2 on eBay. For the keyboard, it takes a standard PS/2 type; with some tweaking.

Here is the pin out for the keyboard adapter, which is located in the lower right corner of the board.

Pin 1: Data
Pin 2: Unused
Pin 3: Ground (GND)
Pin 4: +5v (VCC)
Pin 5: Clock
Pin 6: Unused

You can't SSH or use the serial port until the system has booted into an OS like pfSense or DD-WRT.

Yes and no.

USB could be used via a low profile PCI card OR by the PCMCIA slots. But, then BIOS can't use it directly. So you can't use it for a keyboard in the BIOS nor can you boot off a USB drive.

If the OS you install supports USB, you're golden. You can also use either the PCI or PCMCIA for Wi-Fi too.
