Rampage IV Extreme board owners question - 1 Stick off RAM, can it go in any slot?

Thread Starter
Wondering if you guys can give me some piece of mind.

Some RAM sticks weren't working as expected on my rampage IV extreme. I posted a question on the ASUS ROG forum.

I tested a known working RAM DIMM in each of the eight DIMM slots, but the board would not post when the RAM was inserted in any of the black DIMM slots (A2,B2, D2 and C2). One of the moderators 'HiVizMan' who appears very knowledgeable and helpful said that this was not the correct behaviour and that a single DIMM should work in any slot on the board. He recommended that I RMA the board, I have a RMA request in with the vendor now.

I just would like to make double/triple sure that this behaviour is not correct before I go through the palaver of returning the board. Thanks

That's not a valid reason for rma. The other slots may not work until the first channel is populated. Some boards work this way, some don't. What's the point of this anyways when you want ideally four channel operation?

The reason I was testing one piece of ram in each DIMM slot was because I have 32GB (4GB x 8 sticks) and the board was only posting with 24GB. Apparently testing only one RAM stick in each slot then booting will show if the DIMM slots are duff.

I see. I'd have to add then that this is a common occurrence with Asus, bad slots. However, did you test the channels in pairs? A1 + A2 or just individually?

I tried it out. My board won't post with a single stick in the D2 or any of the 2nd paired slots, single dimm.

Maybe I should rma my board too? lol.

How's he going to get to the bios if it doesn't post?

Just tried individually.

Many thanks for checking your board. Your seeing the same behaviour, from this I can only conclude that the board will not post with a single DIMM in the black DIMM slots (A2,B2, D2 and C2)

It will post with all 8 dimms populated it just only registers 24gb, I think I can go to the screen with the RAM pictures on it and check and see. I wait sec I'll try.

It's not rare for a platform to only tolerate memory installed in a certain order.

You are trying to run 5GHz with 8x4GiB of DDR3-2133?

That may well explain why it's not working right there. SB-E IMC runs at full core speed, faster the CPU, the more stress on the IMC. Faster the memory, more stress on the IMC. More memory, especially filling all ranks...more stress on the IMC.

You probably either need to back off on the memory clock, loosen some subtimings (especially tRFC, command rate, and/or round trip latency), increase vtt/dram io voltage, or a combination of these things.

Only if 32GiB isn't shown at any combination of memory/CPU speeds would I be inclined to think the problem was hardware.
