^^^ Wow. What he said.

Also, are you running BIOS 1404 ? If not, that might help as ASUS has made alot of RAM compatibility improvements over the last few updates.

You are trying to run 5GHz with 8x4GiB of DDR3-2133?
That may well explain why it's not working right there. SB-E IMC runs at full core speed, faster the CPU, the more stress on the IMC. Faster the memory, more stress on the IMC. More memory, especially filling all ranks...more stress on the IMC.
You probably either need to back off on the memory clock, loosen some subtimings (especially tRFC, command rate, and/or round trip latency), increase vtt/dram io voltage, or a combination of these things.
Only if 32GiB isn't shown at any combination of memory/CPU speeds would I be inclined to think the problem was hardware.

I'm running stock CPU speed at the moment and stock ram speed and recommended voltage (1600mhz/1.5v). I will be OC'ing after I hurdle this problem...

Well, you've already reseated the CPU and checked for good pin-pad contact...

I would still try some manual timings. It's possible that a 4x4 kit was programed with SPD/XMP values that weren't ideal for two DIMMs per channel.

OK, I might have found the culprit.

I stuck all the ram in. This time the board posted with 28GB found this time.

I put tested two sticks at a time in the red channel (D1 and C1) every time the board booted with 8GB apart from once, it only showed 4GB.

One of the sticks (which I believe is misbehaving or not matching) was then tested in with each one of the other sticks (in pairs). Each time the board only posts 4GB.

When I use this dud stick on it's own the board finds it and it memtest86+ fine, but with any other stick it doesn't appear the board is finding it. I need to go to that graphic display screen on the RAM slots in the BIOS to confirm this...but I think that is enough for tonight.

These boards are complete garbage for ram over 16 gigs. They just don't seem to like pretty much anything, even if it's a legit 32 gig matched kit.. Some of the guys on ROG forums are really helpful but some of the mods are nutsacks. I went through every ram kit they had at ME until I found a set of kingstons that worked at the store. Had to tweak timings, voltage etc but got them working after trying out 10 different 32 gig sets lol. 16 gig sets pretty much all worked perfectly fine. It's just a pissy board lol

Correction: it's a pissy platform. thumb.gif

But I wouldn't want to be overclocking by SB-E on any other board.
