A few months back i was about to purchase a i7 3930k. I didn't because i wanted to see what happened with ivy bridge. Well IB has been out for a while now. All you folks here have had time to test drive the crap out of it. So now that the numbers are in. Whats the score when both of these great cpus are overclocked.. I will be using a XSPC Raystorm RX360 Extreme for cooling. As far as mobo, for the 3930k i would rock the asus rampage iv extreme. I am not sure whats a great mobo for the 3770k. I plan to push the oc to the max then back her down a bit for long life. I just want to know what cpu has the most raw power. My main pc use is gaming but i would like to know i have the power to do other demanding things. From what i have heard IB suffers from heat when oced. In the end though the 6 cores of the i7 3930k has to be a bit warm as well. I plan to sli the rumored gtx 685 if it is not just a rumor. I play skyrim with insane amounts of mods and its killing my phenom II. I usually buy all the new games with the bomb graphics. So i want a cpu that i know is going to eat up anything i throw at it for a good amount of time. Oh i have one other question, i heard from a friend that the i7 3930k won't support pci e 3.0 not that it matters much at the moment.

I recommend a the 3770k. It's a drop in replacement and will overclock fairly well. Don't expect to get 4.7+ with ease though. As you probably already know, IB chips get much hotter and can be a little more difficult to get stable (passed 4.6).

i7-3930K will last a lot longer on the road because LGA 2011 will keep on having new CPU's added to it until 2016 (Ivy Bridge-E in ~2012-2013?, Haswell-E in ~2015-2016?). X79 does support PCI-E 3.0, though for nVidia cards, you have to get a hack to make it working. It's not going to be important nonetheless because with X79 you have 40 PCI-E lanes, so if you're running a 16X-16X 2.0 SLI/CFX config it's going to be the same as an 8X-8X 3.0 SLI/CFX config.
Also, some mods are incredibly CPU-dependent. I'd get six cores versus four.

so if i get the asus rampage iv extreme it states it has pci-e 3.0 but i have to hack it if i use nvidia. Thats kind of weird, is it hard. Like u said though its not like the gtx 685 in 2x sli would saturate pci-e. 2.0 Is this 2.0 limited because of the cpu. In other words when i upgrade from SB-E to IB-E would i then have the 3.0 pci-e. Thats the other reason i have been opting for the x79. I know that i probably won't have (all) the new little things that come with IB-E due to having a old x79 board, but at least the option is there
p.s. just realized i should probably have this in the Intel cpu section, my bad. fell free to move it on over if anyone notices with that ability.

For futureproof/multithreaded usage the SB-E chip (3930k) wins otherwise pick the 3770k.
