Decision: RAID 10/01 or Not To.

I've been wondering should I setup RAID my rig with 4x 3TB HDD for anything like project, recording, films, games; large files range from (10GB to 25GB). Some recording can use up 50GB.

Current setup:

1x 120GB SSD (OS + some large game (mmo/BF3) to load faster).
1x 3TB Primary storage as stated before.
1x 2TB Backup drive (backup from 3TB as copies)
1x 500GB temporary drive

Planning setup.

1x 120GB SSD (OS).
4x 3TB Primary Storage in RAID 10 / 01

1x 2TB bye
1x 500GB bye

I know RAID 10/01 has no real backup but the chance of getting a fail drive and replace will be long lasting to me. What I meant if 1 drive fail, I'll just replace it and keep it running ever and ever.

Now, is it ideal for me to invest about $450 for RAID 10 (6TB) setup in my purposes (not just gaming)?

Good afternoon,
To answer your question is that it depends... Is there going to be a performance difference? Slightly.. It comes down to a budget thing. If you have the money floating around sure. For example loading games may shave some seconds off the load, or sometimes you may never notice any difference. At least you have redundancy in the RAID setup though. You may benefit from the file transfers of saving yourself seconds to minutes during a move/copy past. Another point is to look at it from a consolidation / simplicity point too which goes a long way.

Again, the increase performance may not even be noticeable in some situations..
Bottom line is if you have the money to spend on it sure. It'll be a good match for you if you do a lot of video editing and you need the one continuous space, rather than having a mess of multiple different sized drives.

I like RAID! I used to buy lotsa hdds..until the prices skyrocketed..I won't buy a hdd until the prices get back to normal
I'd put 2-3 drives in RAID 0 and backup stuff periodically on the others
raid 10 has some higher seek time
3 drives is ideal for RAID 0
You could do 2 separate raid 0 arrays..probably get around 100+Mbps transfers

I personally prefer Striped array that's mirrored (0+1) vs mirrored array that's striped (1+0). Both will perform fairly similar.

Am I required or best to have a UPS (Uninterpretable Power Supply)?

I was thinking of RAID 01 as well unless I have 6 drives to RAID but now it's just 4. 10 or 01 doesn't matter I guess.

RAID 10 or RAID 5 or 6 w/ a good RAID card and BBU (~$100 for a Dell PERC 5/i or 6/i w/BBU). RAID 5 or 6 should give you no trouble with speeds and you get more room.

Got a little question.

If I have the setup below as RAID 01:

Group 1

Disk 1 (A - B)

Disk 2 (C - D)

Group 2

Disk 3 (A - B)

Disk 4 (C - D)

If Disk 2 failed in Group 1.

Would I be able to remove RAID 01 and set it RAID 0 temporary alone to run it?

Group 2 as RAID 0 (not RAID 01 anymore - Group 1 disks are offline or removed)

Disk 3 (A - B)

Yeah, you can. That's the whole point of it. However, RAID-10 is better for uptime. With RAID-10, you'll have:

Group 1
Disk 1 (A - C)
Disk 2 (A - C)

Group 2
Disk 3 (B - D)
Disk 4 (B - D)

With RAID-10, you can have Disks 1&3 or 1&4 or 2&3 or 2&4 fail at the same time and your RAID array will still work (albeit in a degraded state). As long as there's at least one drive from each set that's working, your array will be operational. With the RAID-01 configuration you posted above, I believe if one drive from each group fails, then you can't use your array.

Decision: RAID 10/01 or Not To.

I wrote the initial info for this case, so that's pretty much my review. Compared to the TT Command Snow I just evaluated, if THIS case was ATX sized, I would rather buy this case than the TT...
