Back to college - good/bad laptop

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

I'm starting college again and I have had my sights on one particular laptop. I've always used Toshiba laptops because of their durability, however they lack the style... So this one is a Samsung.

What are your thoughts on Samsung laptops?

Here it is...

It has 6Gb ram a Gt650 and an i7.
However it only has a 1600x900 resolution, isn't that a bit low?

Tell me what you think?

Are you needing it to play games. Or is anything required for college?

1600x900 seems very low on a 17" screen. I use the 1920x1200 setting on my MBP 15.4" and its nice.

Maybe have a look at the Dell Alainware m17, that has a 17" 1920x1080 display with an ivy i7 and gtx675.
Dell do student discount.

1600 x 900 is a good 15" laptop display. 6gbs of ram, 650gt, i7 is decent and is the standard for laptop gaming nowadays. If you want real performance, 670 or 675m is the way to go.

Look @ clevo barebone builds with sager laptops. Xoticpc is where I'd go to look @ this stuff.

well it depends what you're going to use it for

if you're going for a 13-14" light utraportable yet packs a bit of a punch take a look at these threads:

http://forum.notebookreview.com/what-notebook-should-i-buy/662161-thin-light-11-14-notebooks-gaming-worth-compendium.html

if you're looking for a desktop replacement (high powered GPU/CPU at the compromise of battery life)
I would look at Clevos/saga custom laptops. I personally wouldn't suggest alienware simply cause its too "flashy". I just don't like the look. I'd also avoid HP cause so far the past few generations of Envy's have overheating issues.

My personal opinion would be to get i7 3rd gen or 2nd gen (i read somewhere that the 3rd gen cpu produces much more heat than the 2nd gen cpu) and get a decent radeon card like HD 7850m because that would consume less power than the nvidia cards and i think if you'll be using your laptop during lectures, to take notes then you'll be needing something which consumes adequate amount of power...Imo, don't go for extreme as either it'll eat a lot of power and produce a lot of heat
