[MW] Massive Apple patent win could kill off Android completely

Patent: http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PALL&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsrchnum.htm&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=8,223,134.PN.&OS=PN/8,223,134&RS=PN/8,223,134

Apple on Tuesday was granted 25 patents that encompass almost all user interface elements used by modern smartphones. Everything from e-mail, telephone, camera, video player, photos, search, and most importantly multi-touch (the system of using multiple finger gestures on a touch screen display) have all been granted to the Cupertino-based company.

This wasn't really all that clear to me so I read the patent and now I'm even more confused:

Quote:
In a computer-implemented method, a portion of an electronic document is displayed on the touch screen display. The displayed portion of the electronic document has a vertical position in the electronic document. An object is detected on or near the displayed portion of the electronic document. In response to detecting the object on or near the displayed portion of the electronic document, a vertical bar is displayed on top of the displayed portion of the electronic document. The vertical bar has a vertical position on top of the displayed portion of the electronic document that corresponds to the vertical position in the electronic document of the displayed portion of the electronic document. After a predetermined condition is met, display of the vertical bar is ceased. The vertical bar is displayed for a predetermined time period when the portion of the electronic document is initially displayed.

Personally with the market share Android has now I doubt Apple will be able to remove it from the market, although my trust in the US government and patent office has become so small I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised.

Not going to happen. Apple rely on Google giving them ideas. Without Android, Apple would rot

How are they even able to patent anything of the sort when Palm and other companies kind of innovated the entire segment, and Apple just came along and "perfected" what had already been done with a fresh, minimalist design and extensive marketing. This is getting so beyond ridiculous, I don't even know what to say. I hate to say it, but the only thing that can stop Apple is if people stop giving them their money...which will never happen.

More absurdity brought to you via the US patent office. Is the patent office itself immune to litigation? Someone needs to put them in check for granting patents on the basic operations of a smart phone.
